Subject: Beginner Abyssal Dwarves [1000pts]

After being completely out of the KoW loop since it first appeared, when pretty much the only factions were Dwarves, Elves, and Undead, I've decided to look back at it again now WHFB as it was is defunct and TW: Warhammer has got me back in the fantasy gaming mood. I've been advised to start with 1k, increase to 1.5k, and finally 2k, so here's my plan for that starting 1k step: General idea is that the rocket launcher forces enemies to come to me, where I can pin them down with the Golems and Immortals, hit flanks with the Berserkers and Halfbreeds--who can also double as War Engine hunters if they need to--and flame things with the Decimators, Fire-team, and Diadem-Driver. I'm not completely sold on the Blessing on just a Regiment of Decimators, so could swap that out, drop the Halfbreeds down to a troop because regiment is a bit overkill and I don't need the extra slots, and grab a troop of Gargoyles for screening. That'd give me 15pts for assorted magic gubbins, likely Fire-oil on the Berserkers and 10pts of stuff elsewhere, or Brew of Courage on the Golems/Immortals to make it even harder to break them. Might have to test whether that's worth losing the re-rolls on the Decimators.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

That's a nice varied list using each type of dwarf unit . I like the Halfbreeds at regiment size, if you want to save points I'd change the Decimators to a troop before them. That'd save you 40, enough to upgrade to a second rocket launcher as you need more ranged threat imo.
Another option is to do something about the golems. I think they're sweet but a regiment is pretty light on attacks and slow since they can't march (you can Surge them if you have an Iron Caster with that upgrade at higher point levels).
I personally have been starting most lists with a horde of either golems or abyssal grotesques (which I'm using my bull centaurs as) since it unlocks so many shots in one go, but it's hard to fit at this point level.
Overall I like it, just worried it's slow without a ranged threat other than the rocket launcher, so your 3 breath weapons will have a hard time being effective against an enemy that hangs back and waits for you. Without an Iron-caster at this level, the golems are particularly slow... so may be worth tweaking things if you find the enemy won't engage.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not sure how much ranged firepower I'll be facing at 1k, so the lone rocket launcher may or may not actually force an enemy to advance. If I out-range them, then it might, otherwise it won't. The main thinking behind the golems was as a secondary anvil unit using their high defence, and their height (3) to screen something hiding behind them--probably the berserkers.
Taking the advice into account, would this be any better?
The Halfbreeds are down to a troop, but I've managed to up the Golems to a Horde, and replaced the Fire-team with a second rocket launcher to give me more of a ranged threat and hopefully force the enemy to come to me. The Diadem-driver is pretty much a Fire-team on his own, so it's not a huge loss. Another option is to drop the Blessing on the Golems and swap one of the rockets out for a G'rog.
EDIT: This would likely be the G'rog list:
Had 10pts left, and decided to give the Halfbreeds headstrong.

I think in my musing I might have implied the opposite of what I'm thinking, which is just that the golems without an iron-caster to surge them (which you can't afford at this point level) might should be dropped here / would be better left for a higher point game.
Without them, you have 135 points, with another 25 possible from the Decimators gift. You could use those points to upgrade to a second rocket launcher, upgrade the berserkers to a regiment so they'll survive long enough to hit, buy a fire-team or another slavedriver, and have 20 points leftover (maybe to get the Decimators a lesser gift).
Alternatively, you could upgrade to a second rocket launcher and get a unit of gargoyles. This would still leave you 20 points.
But without surge I just can't see the golems getting where they need to be at 1000 points!
