Hi guys,
So I've just finished another game against my friend and his Tyranids. Last game was a bloodbath, this one was also. 15-7 maelstrom end of turn 4 with 1 of his units left on the board and 3/4 of mine.
I specifically decided not to bring my stronger units this game, my list was as follows
CAD
Szerath (Never ran, wanted to try)
Anrakyr (Never ran, wanted to try)
10x immortals
10x warriors
1x stalker
5x rod praets (Never ran them before so wanted to try them).
4x wraiths (1 w/ TDB, rest with coils)
4x TB w scopes, vanes, gauss
1x annie barge (Never ran, wanted to try)
1x doomsday ark (Never ran, wanted to try)
2x HD's
Allied formation (starting to collect KDK so wanted to try the bloodthirster I got)
1x Wrath of Khorne Bloodthirster
8x cultists
I specifically didn't run my stalker with my HD's, as it was brutal last game. I ran a buffed up squad of immortals with both HQ's and had my annie barge floating about just shooting whatever. my DA stayed back and shot things, while everything else advanced super aggressively. I was lucky with my RP, he was unlucky with his shooting attacks, he forgot to deepstrike the massive super hurty thing that does Large blast templates until like turn 4, and forgot the psychic phase most of the time, and I got amazingly lucky with my deny the witch the other times.
We are both learning a bit so mistakes were made on both sides, but I feel bad after that game. I could tell he wasn't having much fun after round 2. I feel my list could have been weaker (swapping the HD's, wraiths, stalker out for flayed ones and deathmarks (only other models I have besides a full Destroyer cult & canoptek harvest).
Is there any thing else I can do to make it more enjoyable/more of an even fight? He's not going to fight my crons any more due to this loss. It seems BS3 hurts his army quite a lot.
Is KDK a more even fight? I will try and remember to remind him of his psychic phase and his deepstriking unit (Did crazy amounts of damage).
Is there anything else I can do with crons to even it out or are they just too strong overall?

What was in his list?
Tyranids tend to be a bit mono-build (or restricted build) as most of the codex is guff.
Also, making mistakes like forgetting to bring in your Mawlocs and using your psychic powers will lose you games against an unforgiving army like Necrons.

Help him a little bit. For example you can remind him of his psychich phase or missing reserves. Besides that he should try the venomtrophes which provide cover saves to basically the whole army, since necrons don`t have that much ignore cover besides the tomb blades, and he should try close combat hormagants with poison. kill 3 or 4 warriors in close combat and then overrun them when they lose their morale check.

Sorry I should have said. He had two flyrants, an exocrine, two of the smaller shooty big beasts, a mawloc, two of those psychic little spore looking things, lots of gaunts, the flying gaunts, one of those big gaunt birthing things.
I realised he was forgetting after a while (I have no deepstrike/psychic so it didn't factor into my thinking initially) and started reminding him of his stuff.
He knows what the power build is, he wanted to try some other things out.
I think I brought too much AP2. I get scared of his big things and wanted to have something to reliably strip wounds off so I brought a couple things.
Are KDK more matched?

Didn't we go over this last time? Don't list tailor and it will be more balanced.

I'm tempted to say yes, nids prefer to be in melee, KDK prefer to be in melee, which stops the imbalances in overwatch and necrons powerful shooting.
If you want it to be really fair then try and avoid a gorepack totally.

Even without using Decurion or anything your Codex is much, much stronger than his. Even the most 'competitive' 'Nids list is going to struggle against a tailored Necrons list. He could use another Flyrant at least, and maybe a Crone. I'd say he could've lost the Zoa's for some Biovores also, but I know when you're starting out you don't have everything on hand. Letting him run Zoanthropes as Malanthropes would be helpful for him. Tervi/Gargs aren't bad and can help with ObSec but he needs more Dakka (Dakkafexes are great) and as the posters above said, remind him to use that Mawloc and encourage Venomthropes or let him run the Zoa's as Malanthropes 'til he can trade a few souls to FW for the Mal models (or convert them).
KDK can go either way. Both KDK and Tyranids are armies that conceptually love CC, but the KDK are far more well-equipped for it in our current edition. It could still make for some fun scrums at objective points so it's something you'll probably want to try anyway.
Edit: Almost forgot, Rippers are cheap and decent, and one of our better Maelstrom ObSec options, as they can Deep-Strike for a minimal investment.

Sorry, I should have phrased that better, I did bring a bit of AP2 but I didn't realise it was in there until we were halfway through the game. TBH the only things I brought deliberately to have some redundancy to his armour was my two HD's. I had never brought the praetorians or the doomsday ark and wanted to see how they would do. I pointed the DA at the big guys so that it couldn't ID whole squads to death, and it took 5 rounds of shooting to get an exocriene to 1 wound. I left my HD's seperate from my stalker so they wouldn't get the buff and they did almost no damage the whole game, killed a model between them. Stalker got 2 shots off whole game, killed 2 gargoyles. Praets did do some work, killed some big guys in CC when the got into the backline, and managed to ground his Flyrant, he kept it grounded next turn to grab an objective, and I got SUPER lucky with a single Trans-dimensional beamer shot ID'ing it. That was about it however. I didn't even realise Anrakyr had a warscythe. I deliberately tried to power down my list, didn't seem to be enough though. My wraiths took two whole turns to finish off a squad of 8 gargoyles. I did get lucky with my deny the witch rolls, and he got doubles first turn trying to spawn gaunts.
The BT did the majority of the heavy lifting for the game.
Yea the gorepack looks cool and I've seen it in a few match-ups, but the rest of the army looks so much cooler, so I dont really want to run it, as the army is so cost intensive. Was thinking the formation with the warp talons and raptors instead, and a few maulerfiends vs his big cc machines would be cool.
Thanks for your input guys
