Hey Dakka,
Looking for some advice from experienced Sons of Russ as to how to flesh out this list;
we're going for Thunderwolf Cavalry Spam, in a Champions of Fenris Kingsguard detachment.
(Don't have my codex & supplement on me atm as at college, will update later.)
The minimum requirement for a Kingsguard detachment is 1 HQ 2 Elites, and so by simply taking 2 barebones servitors, (only slot-less if Iron Priest Included), I can pay 20points for the bonuses granted by the Kingsguard Detachment.
+1 WS on my elite cavalry units? Yes please!
So I was thinking of running this list at 1250pts, where the sheer mass of wolves will be too much for most opponents to deal with effectively.
3 Thunderwolf Cavalry Units of 3, with Storm Shields. what weapon loadout do people recommend? On one hand, Hammers, Fists and Blades will increase the power of the unit, but do they really need it?
WS 5, T6, I5, 7?A Each on an average charge? with rending. actually..... that does make some investment seem more worthy... Wolf Claws? Hammers?
The Point is that for 195pts, 3 Thunderwolves with Shields doesn't seem too woof? -(sorry)
4 sets at 195pts a bash gives me 780pts, +20 for 2 lone Servitors. 800pts. Harald Deathwolf could take a 5 man unit and outflank them, potentially forcing my opponent into a corner?
whilst 2 units of 3 Thunderwolves bear down on the enemy lines. 12 wolves isn't a high model count, but I'm willing to bet this list wins at least a few games? The outflank manoeuvre should help close distance, and once the outflankers strike, the enemy is forced to fight 2 battles at once.
My problem is that ultimately, the end model count (un-including servitors), has to be a multiple of 3. I'm not prepared to pay £33 for a character model, rocking a wolf mount or not. plus his wolf looks really camp.
No Sir, mine shall be converted from the boxes, and I REALLY don't like the idea of buying a box just to build one model and have 2 in reserve. all or nothing, maximum cost effectiveness from each box.
What do you helpful hounds reckon? worth kitting them out? or better to rely on rending and take more bodies?
to expand I'll consider Terminators, (TH&SS most likely), and fenrisian wolves? maybe drop pod dreads... but only later.... much later.
I want this to work in the lowest point bracket possible, to minimise the odds of getting an opponent who can deal with them.
The Thunderwolf Cavalry have always been an embodiment of 40k to me, as a kid they were unaffordable but awesome, and now as an adult man; I have the financial leverage to build a raiding force of killer style.
Cheers for any responses in advance, and apologies for the ridiculously long post, I was as much thinking aloud as elaborating, but wanted to give you an insight into the (safe part of) my conscious pool.
