So one thorn in my side is that many Formations don't allow certain special characters to be used. What I propose is that each Special Character have a little rule stating they can be used in place of a generic character in Formations.

For example, Shadow Captain Solaq from the Shadow Force Solaq boxed set would have the following special rule:
Shadow Captain Solaq may be taken in place of a Captain in formations.

Every Special Character would have a rule like this. That way characters released after a formation is published or made by Forge world would be able to be used in appropriate Formations for their faction.

That's one the costs of using a formation, I suppose.

Very true. But I think it is a needless one.

If they re-worded things using key words, (like AoS) that might also fix things, and keep formations open ended.

I.e. the Battle Demi-co might be worded “Must include a character with the “Captain” or “Chaplain” trait. The generic HQs as well as all the special characters would have the respective traits.

Going to this sort of system would also clean up some of the arguments with preferred enemy, etc.
