Grim Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain

A Protoss colony world

I was brainstorming for some fluff regarding an Imperial Knight that serves alongside the Dark Angels, but is not one of the Three Witnesses, and I came up with this. Please don't be too harsh, as I've never read any of the 40k novels; only the fluff bits from the various codexes.

Before the Horus Heresy, but after the Emperor was reunited with his long-lost Primarchs, there was a Knightly House on a planet near Caliban. This house was called Voltar. They were aligned with the Imperium rather than the Adeptus Mechanicus. House Voltar's Knights served with distinction during the Great Crusade, often serving alongside the Dark Angels, and even being honored for valor by Lion El'jonson himself. Then, the Horus Heresy happened, and everything changed.

When Horus and some of the other Primarchs betrayed the Emperor, several Knightly Houses also turned to Chaos. Voltar was not one of them, until one day Luther of the Dark Angels visited with several of the Knights from this house. Luther himself had already become tainted by the Ruinous Powers, but now he spread his taint into the hearts of some of the once-noble Knights of House Voltar. After several secret meetings, Luther returned to Caliban, which soon became enshrouded by Warp Storms. After the defeat of Horus and his followers, Lion El'jonson and the Dark Angels that accompanied him returned to Caliban only to run afoul of Luther's betrayal. When the Lion regrouped, he sent a call for help to his old allies in House Voltar, a call that was quickly responded to. The House was never a particularly extensive one, certainly not on the level of others like House Terryn, but they sent the vast majority of their Knights to aid the Lion in his hour of need. Unfortunately, due to some of the plans set in motion by Luther, the ones who remained in the stronghold were all traitors. Some of the traitors also went to Caliban with the still-loyal ones (the King and his Barons were all loyal). When the Lion and the loyal Dark Angels landed on Caliban's surface, they were accompanied by the Knights of House Voltar.

During the fighting on Caliban, the traitor Knights sprung their trap. They had managed to position themselves behind the loyal Knights and thus were in perfect position to take them by surprise, which was essential to their plan as they were outnumbered by the Loyalists. They opened fire on their former sword-brethren to devastating effect, as the ion shields of the loyalists were rotated forward to fend off the firepower of the fallen Dark Angels. The High King of House Voltar, and all but one of the Barons, were slain before they even knew what happened, and many more valiant Knights were downed before the others realized what was happening and regrouped. Soon the battle between the Knights became a fiery backdrop to the main battle for Caliban that saw Luther and his Primarch duelling each other in the main fortress monastery.

Back on the Knights' homeworld, a horrible massacre had occurred. The Knights who remained behind slaughtered everyone who served the House and destroyed everything belonging to the House; even the maintenance facilities for their huge Knight machines were leveled. Luther had promised them newer and better such facilities courtesy of the Chaos forces, even gifts from the Dark Gods themselves for their machines, so they had no second thoughts about what they did. They then boarded transport ships and headed to Caliban to aid their fellow traitors. When they arrived, they swung the momentum of the Knight battle away from the loyalists, who had begun to gain the upper hand despite the backstabbing surprise attack. All of this was happening as the planet began to break apart from the sustained bombardment by the Dark Angels' fleet in orbit. Indeed, the fleet was so busy dealing with the ground emplacements that they completely missed the traitor Knights' transport ships until it was too late.

By the time the battle between Luther and the Lion had ended, the surviving Baron of House Voltar had ended up directly outside the walls of the main fortress monastery where the two had been duelling. He had felled many of the traitor Knights himself, but knew that his House was no more if the Knights who were supposed to have stayed behind to guard the stronghold were on Caliban, and sided with the traitors. His position was very fortunate, for the planet soon fragmented entirely and he found himself standing on the piece that became the Rock. When the Warp storm subsided, there was no sign of the Fallen or any other surviving Knights, loyal or traitor. The Baron, a cousin of the slain High King named Gideon Voltar, dismounted from his machine's Throne Mechanicum and climbed down to the ground and wept openly. He was quickly siezed by the Dark Angels and imprisoned, and his machine was placed in storage pending the decision of Gideon's fate.

When the Dark Angels were reorganized and formed their Inner Circle to prepare to hunt for the Fallen, they soon realized that they had to decide what to do about Gideon Voltar. He was not a Dark Angel himself, but had seen the Fallen and therefore was a danger since he knew the secret. However, when he was about to be executed to ensure his silence, Gideon told the Dark Angels that he could be of more use to them alive. He asked to see visual recordings of the Battle of Caliban in order to see if any of his knightly brethren had escaped the planet before it was destroyed. Carefully surveying the records, it was determined that all save Gideon of the loyalists were slain, but some of the traitors were unaccounted for. The Dark Angels realized that this could be as bad as the Fallen themselves. Gideon proposed that he would help with the hunt for the Fallen, especially to hunt down his traitorous former brethren from his House. The Inner Circle deliberated and granted Gideon's request, albeit reluctantly since he was not a Dark Angel himself. They ultimately decided that the best thing to hunt traitorous Knights was another Knight. Gideon Voltar's machine was repainted to hide its true origins and repaired and maintained by the Chapter's Techmarines and their servitors, and it was reported to the Imperium that House Voltar in its entirety was destroyed after turning against the Emperor. As the millennia went on, Gideon's descendants (it is unknown how he managed to have any, although it can be assumed they did NOT come from his homeworld) each continued to serve the Dark Angels and managed to hunt down many of the traitor Knights. The Knight machine itself, renamed Thunder of Judgment, continued to be maintained by the Dark Angels chapter (a secret they kept well hidden from the Adeptus Mechanicus). It even served with some of the successor chapters at different times. Although the agents of the Imperium definitely raised some eyebrows about the stories of an Imperial Knight Freeblade with some colors and insignias from the Dark Angels, none who were bold enough to ask were ever heard from again. It simply added to the mystery of the Dark Angels, and was yet another reason that other Space Marine chapters were suspicious and distrusting of them.

This fluff is intended for the Knight I am currently working on. I am going to paint it in colors that, while not completely matching the Dark Angels in scheme and layout, will be very complimentary to them in order to tie the whole force together on the tabletop. I wanted to have some fluff that would help this make sense. I don't have a complete scheme planned out but I am working on one. Hopefully the fluff is original enough and interesting enough; I enjoyed coming up with it. Sorry if my writing skills are not up to scratch; I can see it in my head easier than I can actually write it.
