I'm new to Warhammer 40k and have purchased, through a friend's impetus, a Tau "Start Collecting" pack. Now, I don't own a CRB copy or a copy of the Tau codex, but from reading online I know I want to play the Farsight Enclaves. I'm very interested in specific formations and detachments, but I only have a rudimentary idea of the rules and I'm not sure purchasing models with the purpose of creating a FE army is a wise choice as I've heard that the codex may actually be obsolete soon. From what I have been able to gather through searches and borrowed codices I have planned, to an extent, the army I want to play. That said, it really depends on how the rules correspond with each other. This hobby is incredibly expensive and I want to be absolutely sure what I want before I buy, so I waste as little as I possibly can.

- I have heard the FE can take Tau Signature Systems and their own Signature Systems. Is this true?
- Does Ta'lissera Bonding a unit of one have an effect? Are all units in a FE army required to take it, or just the detachment that your commander is part of?
- Are formations restricted to "Apocalypse" type battles? I can't find the rules for these types of battles. Do they still exist?
- Are you allowed to place an Independent Character in whatever unit you want? In regards to the FE armies, can I just purchase a member of the 8 and use them, or must it be part of the "The Eight" formation?
- The Earth Caste Pilot Array seems to be made for Riptides, but RAW doesn't seem to allow that unit to take the upgrade. In the Mont'ka book, this is resolved. Still, what?
- Are modifications to models "added "fluff"" legal? As in, added plastic pieces or pieces of another model?
- I'm also worried about a friend using artillery. Ignores Cover over the entire board is terrifying, and with a large blast that can wipe an entire unit in one blow per turn, it's even more terrifying. How do I deal with this?

I don't expect these questions to be answered here, in the introduction forum. If someone could tell me where I can ask all my questions I have and will have for quite some time, that would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time, guys!

Welcome newcomer!

I can have a go at answering most of your questions, despite not playing the game anymore and not owning the FE codex supplement

- I believe the FE have some of the original signature systems and some new ones unique to them, such as Fusion Blades
- The Bonding Knife Ritual is pointless on one man units as it only comes into effect when leadership tests are taken to regroup, which can only really happen when the unit has suffered casualties and started retreating
- Formations are limited only by their points cost; if the game allows for the amount of points listed on it, then it can be used, so you should be able to use the formation in your Start Collecting box straight away
- Independent characters may join any squad they wish and detach from them at any time outside of assault by moving out of coherency range. Members of The Eight can be purchased separately last time I checked, as the formation is very expensive
- Don't own the Mont'ka book so no idea
- You can customise your models as you want with extra pieces, as long as (for tournaments at least) you stick to WYSIWYG. You should also note that any extra height you add to your model will not be taken into consideration when determining line of sight in game.
- I'd personally keep a Battlesuit squad in reserve (Stealth or Crisis) armed with a Fusion Blaster or two. Drop in close to the artillery via Deep Strike and blow it to hell!

For future reference, you may want to post questions like this in the 40k General Discussion forum, and if you have any debates about how certain rules work, post them in You Make Da Call

Hope this helped you out. Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the reply, G.A.

I'll go ahead and move over to the General Discussion board like you suggested with the rest of my questions. I appreciate the time you took to answer them!

I'm only worried that I will have too many questions.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
