Hey Dakkanauts,

My siblings and I are about to embark on the adventure of making cardboard proxy bases for all their x-wing needs. Excellent for use with the smaller folk. Wish me luck!

Later that day...

Cheers on witnessing to a younger generation. They need the love of the Force in their life.

Can I ask why you didn't make the movement templates out of something a little sturdier, like matboard, though?

Hah, it is a very wise idea to make it out of cardboard. I had my buddy's baby somehow get a hold of my Imperial Raider TIE Advanced... and well, I had to eBay a new one.

Also do you want bases? I have a slew of extras after I replaced mine with the new blue ones. I would be more than happy to give them to you.

Well, we moved across the country and had a ton of moving boxes. So I decided to use the same stuff I was making Ebay boxes out of. What I did to make the templates sturdier was tape them with packing tape, they have proven to be strong enough for little hands. Making more is easy enough too.

I would most certainly be receptive of either, will PM. I have never used plasticard before in my life of hobbying, does it cut easily?

Thank you all for your kind words! Here is some progress and some ready materials! The only problem with Card-Wing is dice. Dice are scarce enough as it is with my normal collection so I have 3 options for the kids beyond using my own: Buying them official dice, using the free X-Wing Dice app, or writing up a reference sheet for normal 8-sided dice.
All of them are valid, the write-up being simple enough for normal 8-sided dice. (X+ to hit with an attack die, the requirement to hit can change to a Y+ if you spend a focus token. Target lock acts as normal. Critical Hits are just the highest possible result(s) of each die roll)

Spoiler:

I color coded a dial per faction. This dial is coded black and "white/grey" for white maneuvers due to some darker areas being on 3 of the 8 dials that couldn't be avoided due to the moving box's design and my own unwillingness to just cut out a new circle!

Starting to toy with making cardboard ships...

If the dice app is free that may be easiest. No need to confuse the rules more than you need to.

Easily enough. Get a nice sharp scalpel/craft knife, and make sure you've got a steel ruler and a cutting board, though!

I like to save the polystyrene sheets/trays, that sometimes come with supermarket pizza, for modelling. It tends to be slightly denser than polystyrene for packing (more like foamboard). It makes an excellent modelling material: it's easy to cut with a knife, you can carve into it, and if you have a heat gun, you can even form it into curves and domes.

I made a simple Tie Fighter proxy out of it, just so you can see... It only took 10 mins to cut out some simple shapes and slot them together (or you could just do silhouettes). If you were making a batch of them I'm sure it would be quicker. I used a cocktail stick for the flight stand. It's not much to look at, but it might be a little more fun than empty bases.

@Smacks

Eyy, that's pretty good! After examning this TIE, I probably should use material other than cardboard for such ships but it doesn't seem impossible.

I am actually tempted to sell the model and ship cards of my entire collection while keeping only the upgrade cards. I have a large collection but I only really care about a few ships here and there because of their aesthetic in functionality, appearance, and lore. Namely the Arc-170 (Two-Seater that looks cool, I used two-seaters in Wings of War because it painted a great image in my mind) and the A-Wing.

Might want to check this thread for cheap proxies and alternates.

The RINCO and EM4 ships look around the right scale.

I have some of the EM4 ships. They are actually about half the scale of X-wing ships, and they have much shorter flight stands. I would say that only a couple of the very largest EM4 ships would be passable as small X-Wing craft (YMMV). On the other hand, if you just want to make a cheap "Space Fighter" game, and don't care about scale, then EM4 would be the way to go: the models are so cheap they're practically disposable.

The Rinco ships are about 25% bigger and the US Toy ones bigger still. They might work.
