Subject: First 30k Army help (Deathguard - Mechanicum)
Hi,
I want to start getting some Models of 30k just for fun matches becouse i like the fluff of some Models and the look of them. I would like to build an Army with the Models i like and wanted to know if this list is playable as it is for games against other 30k or even not loosing too hard against a 40k Army.
I especially would need Help with the Mechanicum part. Is it playable or even legal to field like this. Im got Confused reading the Mechanicum Thagmatar Army List.
Spoiler:
Primary Detachment: Deathguard Legion Astartes: Traitor, XIV: Death Guard
HQ Calas Typhoon
Master of Legion: The Reaping
Bodyguards: 3 Deathshroud Terminators
Troops 2 x Legion Veteran Tactical Squad
Veteran Tactics: Marksmen
Veteran Sergeant: Artificer Armour, Rad Grenades
3 x Veteran Space Marines Boltguns
1 x Veteran Space Marine Heavy Flamer
Squad: Melta Bombs, Chem-Munitions
Heavy Support Grave Warden Terminators
Chem-Master: Chainfist, Rad Grenades
4 x Grave Warden Terminator
HQ Archmagos Draykavac with Abeyant (Did i read correctly that he can only be used in a Primary? on another note i read that he can be used in a non primary oO)
Troop Castellax class Battle-automata Maniple
2 x Castellax class Battle-automata, Enhanced Targeting Array
Heavy Support Thanatar Class Siege-automata, Paragon of Metal, Enhanced Targeting Array
Legion:
That would be 2000 Points. I read that this would be a Point Value where you can play good games against 40k Armies. Thanks in Advance for your help and sry for my bad English.

The reaping makes vets non-compulsory troops, meaning you have to have two compulsory troops (assault squads, breached squads or normal tactical squads) before you can take vets or heavy support squads in your troop slots. Ideally you would need at least 1 more troop any way. Only two troops just doesn't cut it in 30k, you probably need at least 3 in 2k games since troops (and a select few others) are the only things that score in 30k.

1) You still need 2 'compulsory' troops (breachers, tacticals, assault marines) with the reaping
2) Even with the reaping, Vet. tactical squads are terrible line troops. IMO they should be support or a squad with a single specific purpose. they are too flimsy and expensive to use as your core troop.
As for the list itself:
As previously mentioned, you need 2 compulsory troops, and for fluff's sake I reccomend 2 20-man tactical squads and 2 apothecaries in an elite slot. Give these squads extra close combat weapons, and you will have a fluff-matching, durrable, strong squad.
The Reaping is amazing, but it's wasted unless you have either 1) multiple squads you can throw into close combat (rad grenades) or have multiple squads that benefit greatly from the grenades (i.e. 2 20-man tac. squads, which puts you on par with chain-axe squads for at least 1 turn )
The Leviathan is great fun

Okay, the first thing to mention is that you are thinking about the rule 'The Rule of the Archmagos' which makes you use an archmagos as your warlord if they are in the primary detachment as well as stating that there can only be one Archmagos in any force.
The second is that you have chosen Castellax as troops, which means you are using the 'Legio Cybernetica' - however the legio cybernetica have a rule called 'Rule of the Dominus' which says you can only use Magos Dominus, Archmagos Dominus or Inar Satarael as your HQ choice until more HQ units have a bit in their unit entry allowing them.
It is worth noting that castellax can never be scoring units.
Any more Mechanicum Questions?

So for the Mechanicum Part of the list i can switch the HQ from Draykavac to Archmagos Dominus on Abbeyant with Power Weapon for about 180 pts or an Magos Dominus with Abbeyant (looks great and gives great bonuses^^) for 100 pts.
and with that the Mechanicum part would be useable
And for the Death Guard part i would need to do a complete overhaul it seems oO
If i keeep the reaping and use 2 Tactical Squads with 10 Soldiers (+additional Melee Weapon) and add to them 1 Apothecarian (Rad Grenades) each. That wouldn't be enough of a change?
Or should i try a different approach on the Death Guard part with a different Rite of War?
I looked over the list and if i take the Magos Dominus with Abeyant for Mechanicum and don't take the Grave Warden Termies i could take: 2 x 20 Man Tacitcals with Extra Melee Weapon and Apothecarian with Rad Grenade and as a 3rd Troop choice a Squad of 5 Vets
And Rad Grenades on Deahtshroud Bodyguards

A couple of things i want to mention.
You can split the two castellax up to use both allied troop slots and split fire when needed.
The special character Inar Satarael gets a nice synergy with the other mechanicum units and is worth serious consideration despite the point increase imho.

Im still at tweaking the Deathguard part and thought about leaving the Mechanicum Part for later.
Im thinking about all your tips and thought about a new list trying to make better use of the RoW The Reaping
Spoiler:
1175
HQ 165 Marshal Durak Rask (i will put him in the Heavy Support Squad)
Troops 870 20 Legion Tacticals with additional Chainsword
20 Legion Tacticals with additional Chainsword
10 Legion Heavy Support Squad with Volkite Culverines (Sergeant has Augury Scanner)
Elites 140 Apothecarion Detachment
2 x Legion Apothecary with Augury Scanner, Rad Grenades and Artificer Armor (1 in each Tactical Squad, Artificer worth it?)
The Problem is where to go from there. I've seen many lists run lots of Rapier Weapons Battery's or Quad Launcher Battery's or have Artillery in the back. But these would be better with RoW Creeping Death.
Where should i go from here Fluffwise or in terms of higher powerlevel to be able to play 30k and 40k Armies. Id like to build up to 2k-2,1k Army. What can i pick to counter Tanks and TEQ?
Thanks in advance
