Adolescent Youth on Ultramar

Stonehenge

Howdy,

I played a fair bit back in 3rd edition but the costs of having 4 young kids put a temporary end to my plastic addiction. Recently my eldest (who is now 9) showed an interest in the hobby so I was more than happy to dust of my old minis and show him the ropes.

I've now seriously got the bug again and am about to begin collecting a new army of (don't hate me) Ultramarines. I've chosen the ultras as I want an army that is both easy to start, has official support (rather than a homebrew which has no iconography on shoulder pads etc), easy to paint and yet will allow me to grow in all areas of the hobby.

I am also very interested in playing 30k so I was thinking to start me off I would buy the Calth boxed set, giving me 30 marines, 2 HQ and a dreadnaught, a healthy core to build from. Is this a good idea or should I go with the Start Collecting box?

I live about 20 minutes from Stonehenge however from September to May I commute to Uni in Southampton every day so if anyone is in either of those areas and fancies a game please hit me up.

Thanks for reading.

Greetings!

Welcome to Dakka

Outer Space, Apparently

Welcome to DakkaDakka newcomer!

Ultramarines are a great idea as a start point as you said, especially if you're considering to get Betrayal at Calth; I don't know much about 30K, but BaC is certainly much cheaper than buying FW resin to start playing, plus those models can now be used in 40K under the Angels of Death codex for Space Marines. Good stuff all round!

The Start Collecting sets are also great value, and buying two will allow you and your son to get playing straight away, as they all include formations for immediate use in the game. So really it's up to you - either split Betrayal at Calth or get a couple of those

I know a good site based in Cheshire that sell 40K at a 15-20% discount across the board, and who deliver really quick across the UK - check them out here, I highly recommend them

Unfortunately I'm in Bournemouth and am trying to settle down after just returning to the UK after a decade of living abroad, and I don't play anymore either. However, be sure to check out the player finder to get some results for people you can play with.

Hope this helps

Happy hunting!
