Hi guys, I've been thinking about jumping on board with 30k as I've had a BaC box sat doing nothing for about 6 months. I've narrowed my legion choices down to Blood Angels, Imperial Fists or Alpha Legion. I used to play BA a few years ago before I gave up 40k and I love their fluff. I've always been tempted by IF but never got round to building an army as painting yellow has put me off. Finally Alpha legion look like they have some cool rules and I would be interested in learning more about their fluff. I was wondering if you guys could let me know a little bit about how each legion plays on the table top and also what would be a good way to build the contents of BaC for each one. I have about £130 spare for some extra purchases too. Cheers

If you don't like painting yellow, don't do IF plain and simple. You will be painting a lot of bodies and tanks, and you won't enjoy it one bit. Out of the remaining 2, I would have to put in a vote for the Alphas, just because they have access to the special models of the different legions. BA do not have any special models as of yet, but the Alphas can in effect 'steal' units from other armys if they choose the appropriate legion ability.

Yeah I think Alpha Legion will be a good shout. Coils looks like interesting. I was thinking of making a FW order soon. I thought 20 Alpha Legion shoulder pads for my BaC box marines and 2 headhunter upgrade packs for the last 10. I would make the 20 as Vets so I can use Pride of the legion. Alternatively I could get 30 shoulder pads and build 3 tac squads to cover the 3 troops slots for Coils of the Hydra and have a bit of spare cash for buying a specialist unit to steal or some vehicles (Rhinos for the tac squads?). Not sure what but I like the look of Gal Vorbak and the Raven Guard snipers.

They're good Units, however most (bar me) would recommend 'stealing' Tyrant Siege Terminators or Fulmentarus Terminators
However my Preference is Grave Warden Terminators, as they have Light Vehicle Killing Capabilities as well as massed infantry killing as well (plus NO ONE would want to charge them)
And they're a fraction of the cost of Tyrant Siege and Fulmentarus Terminators (whopping at around and over 500 points for ten, whereas Grave Wardens are only 375)
Or 'Steal' 5 Iron Circle, Because you can somehow do that

Lol your worried about the price of fulmentarus and tyrants but then suggest 5 iron cirlce that clocks in at over 1k.

Blood angels would be easiest for painting (if you want to do the color shifting AL)

I think you should do Blood Angels. They, like yourself, are recent additions to the Heresy. You mention your love of the fluff and that's what drives 30k. You'll have the opportunity to play them at there prime. I think of the 40k depictions of the Founding chapters as one piece of a jigsaw puzzle and 30k allows you to draw in the rest of the picture the way you want.

I think it's worth pointing out that even though it unpopular among players to paint legions in anything other than their typical color schemes there are many instances of atypical color schemes. For example the offshoot of the Imperial Fists that eventually become the Black Templars are already portrayed with a predominantly black color scheme with only a small portion of the shoulder pad yellow. The HH books depict a few other similar instances for other legions and as the Heresy progresses there are references of subsets of Legionaries that begin to paint their armor in atypical schemes to distinguish themselves from the members of their legion who didn't necessarily experience the same battles.

Are Blood Angels likely to get some more rules and models any time soon?
How would you guys recommend building BaC for each legion?
AL seem to work well with vet squads so I was thinking of 2 vet squads and either a tac squad or a headhunter squad with the last 10 guys. All sergeants with pf and pd, 1 vet squad with 2 heavy bolters and suspensor webs, one with a missile launcher and a melta for some anti tank.
BA obviously will want assault squads yes? I have a load of left over bits from my 40k BA so the chain swords etc are covered I would just need to order some mkIV jet packs. Would it be worth doing 15 man assault squad and then a tac or vet squad to start with?

Conventional wisdom has the Headhunters as overly expensive and coming a poor second therefore to seekers or veterans for less points.

Take a look at the Alpha Legion transfer sheet as well. Personally, I like that way more than I like the AL tactical marine shoulderpads. All comes down to personal preference, though.
