Hello Dakka!

I'm not too steeped on the lore behind the Salamanders, and likewise, Deathwatch. I'm currently assembling and painting my Death Masque set and chose a Salamander with, naturally, a heavy flamer and I want to keep my modelling/painting choices as close to the lore as possible. With that said:

I know the Salamanders are expert craftsmen and typically have unique and ornate armor each marine crafts themselves. I was wondering if the same applies for Salamanders of Deathwatch. Would the Inquisition frown upon Salamanders customizing the typical black armor of the Deathwatch?

Thanks for the read!

The Salamander Terminator from Kill Team Cassius (from the Overkill box) has very ornate armour, so I would suppose that DW members can do that to some degree. As long as they paint most of it black anyway

Some Salamanders paint flames and fire in their armour. I think that, if you have skill, it could be an interesting idea to paint.

Deathwatch Marines can do as they like with their armour, the Deathwatch is noted as being one of the only places in the Imperium that actually innovates.

Also worth noting that not all DW members have Inquisition issue Mk. VIII armour, some will be using the armour they came with, so that could be very ornamental.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I certainly appreciate the time taken.

It does make sense to me that DW wouldn't suppress one of the core attributes of a Chapter -- in this case, the Salamanders -- from practicing their fundamental chapter rites and rituals. But I had to consider that, similarly to any actual real-world army, there would have to be some uniformity, particularly given the standard-issue black armor. I understand that, at the very least, ALL black armor is unacceptable as it is disrespectful to the Emperor.

I appreciate the info!
