Hey all. I have been thinking about starting a new army and have fallen for the idea of an artillery heavy guard list. My plan is to take an 'Emperor's Wrath' Artillery Battery with Wyverns, Basilisks and Manticores along side a good amount of infantry (probably a platoon with some mortars, autocannons, and lascannons and a Chimera with some meltagun veterans and/or some suicide melta scions) to maximise the effectiveness of the Target Sighted special rule (as far as I can tell only infantry can have vox-casters). How viable do you all think this would be and how would you recommend getting Vox-caster units within 18 inches of the enemy? Should they be in transports, scouting/outflanking, should they be behind Aegis Defence Lines waiting for the enemy to come to them or some/all of the above?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

First off, if your gonna take artillery batteries, it might be an idea to bubble wrap the artillery models in guard blob units for intervening model cover saves; this goes miles keeping your artillery alive.

As for target aquired, you could have some throw away units pushing forward with meltas/demolition charges. They won't last long but it'll give you target aquired for the first 2 turns, after that you should have line of sight on the enemy anyway.

Ive had a lot of fun with this formation recently. Ive been playing assault armies; variations of demons Khorne and chaos. Blood angels, and also tyranids. I used 1 manticore, 1 basilisk, 1 wyvern. You can give the commander Kurovs cain (I think is the name.) its 10 points and passes all orders on everything besides a double six, but you need to be within 6" to give the orders. I put a 30 man blob with the manticore, basilisk, and CCS in the chimera. Attach a preist for fearless.

It wrecks armor, especially with target sighted, I put one vet squad with melta and a vox in a taurox to jump up and get target sighted. and a CCS with plasma guns and a vox to do the same on the other side of the board for options. You really want to get to effective shooting in the first couple rounds, not wait for your opponent to get closer, the basilisk and manticore basically have infinite range and you should exploit that.

Ive had trouble with MCs though, you definitely need things to specifically deal with these threats as the artillery cant one shot toughness 6 MCs or flyers.

On the opposite corner of the arty formation I put pask in a punisher with a buddy surrounded by conscripts and a commissar. This is to make my opponents choose which they would rather tolerate, and its worked well so far, except for one game against tyranids I had some horrible rounds of shooting, and I couldnt deal with all the MCs. Thats been the hurdle Ive been trying to get over recently.

Ive been wanting to experiment with scions and their vox casters, but havent came up with anything solid on paper yet.
