I've just started getting into Infinity and bought the CA starter pack (the newer one that looks very Onyx Contact Force). I am wondering what I should buy to expand it? I want to make a general CA force, not the sectorial.

The CA starter is also the ONYX starter in that it's sold as the generic CA starter but every unit is an ONYX unit. They also sell an army pack that makes a 300pt ONYX force from the starter (though it also includes the starter, so it's not a good choice now that you've bought that), so if you're looking at ONYX that might be a good place to look for ideas.

I'm actually wanting to do the opposite and branch out into the full generic CA.

Find a Charontid those are awesome all around goodie for a generic CA force and they make a good lieutenant choice or a specialist unit, e.g. hacker etc. Then I would either look for a Shavastii specialist unit or a Morat specialist unit. A noctifier unit is always a good choice and maybe a Medium Infantry Morat or even a heavy infantry to round out the combat choices.
