So, say an offoworlder is hungry and he wants to eat somewhere he's familiar with... where's the nearest mcdonalds? Burger King? Burger King equivalents? The question is: is there any galaxy - wide food chain that we know about in 40k? Infact, are there even restaurants in 40k? I just had country chicken sandwich and am now curious.

Not that I know of. But apparently there is such thing as "Grox Burgers"

Groxes (is that the plural?) being these giant lizard things that have a lot of meat and every bit of them is nutritious. That and they can live nigh anywhere and eat almost anything.

So I would imagine there could be "fast food" of some sort some where. There is also mention of things like Rat Kebabs or other quickly made and fried food that is sold by street vendors.

It all depends on the planet.

Depends on the world.

Now the galaxy is a big place, and humanity has colonised a lot of worlds

Now think of how vastly different we are between countries on our small world

The answer to your question will likely be Yes there are maga chains for food.. but how far they are spread depends on a lot of things

Resurants get mentioned in various novels

Church 'n' Munch is the only surviving fast-food joint in the galaxy, formed from a combination of humanity's love of religion and fast food.

Now, for the citizen on the go, they can get a large basket of Eucharist wafers and a flask of diet communal wine for a great price.

Grox or groxen are all I've seen them mentioned as.
Although I don't doubt porcuswine and Buggalo are around also (it's a big galaxy and GW appropriated the .75cal recoilless from the same places that deathworlds and other things came from ... )

Not according to lore, but I'm pretty sure that out there in some underhive there is bound to be a "Rat King Burgers" somewhere.

In the Imperium interplanetary travel is either super rare and exclusive or coerced. Either you're a billionaire trader/lord/official or you're a press-ganged crewman/pilgrim/guardsman.

So the quick answer is for the most part either you've got your own food supply and cook with you, or you're just happy to have food.

That being said, like STC, there would probably be some common food stuffs across the Imperium, standardized for colonies, military efforts and so on. Stuff that will work for just about any human variant.

So guardsmen might have strong opinons about whether Mordia's Gruel #4 is better than Necromunda's Gruel #4.

The Cain books mention Soylent Lentels (no points for guessing what they're made from) and the Einhorn books mention some other common foodstuffs like Amsec and ilho sticks.

A standardized thing like McDonalds designed to be fast, convenient and tasty would not be too common. The Imperium does not care about convenience or taste and communications and travel would make it hard to organize the same food and decor across several worlds.

But anything is possible. Recipes, icons and other aspects might survive into the stars.

Perhaps the mid-hives of Necromunda are torn apart by the inter-sectarian wars of the Sons of Ronald, the Princes of Burger and the Daughters of Wendy.

I think there was a book (Eisenhorn or Ravenor?) that mentioned Grox burgers, or some form of burgers anyway. I honestly don't see the reason why some worlds should not have their fast food chains, especially those close to Agri Worlds, or even said planets themselves.

Trans-stellar fast food chains are impossible due to high prices for transport, no common culture/values to attach with the food chain and big differences between planets.

Some worlds seems to be state capitalistic or oligopols, where only a few megacorporations have mixed with the government/nobility/church and the workers are paid in food vouchers - only usable in the company stores, of course. On these worlds independent chain store are simply unable to operate.

But on many worlds that are "civilised middle class" (but seldom mentioned by BL or GW since neither the Inquisition, Caphias Cain, Space Marines or IG have any reason to visit "suburbia") it would be reasonable that brand-oriented stores such as IKEA, Mcdonalds or Wal-Mart exist.

Restaurants are mentioned in several books, but I don't recall any brand names.

I could see an STC for a "generic automatic cooking kitchen" (GACK for short) being available.

Construction would make use of readily at hand materials which would most likely affect taste:
- Please use iron, "we have copper", it will do, Please use plastic, "we have wood", it will do, Please use glass, "we have rock", it will do, Please use natural gas, "we have diesel", it will do...

Then the foodstuffs:
- Please use meat, "we have Grox", it will do, Please use plant, "we have Ork", it will do, Please use carbohydrate, "we have wood", it will do, Please use minerals, "we have sand", it will do, Please use water, "we have swamp water", it will do...

Yep, I can see for something "standard" it can vary wildly from planet to planet.
Nostalgia for the older less refined models could be a thing as well as the "traditional" ingredients.

There are definitely restaurants

one is mentioned in unremembered empire where that one perpetual has to talk to eldrad or whatever in a booth while drinking alcohol.

im sure there are interplanetary pizza company in the ultramar system. at least before the heresy. and as a massive empire they probably would have fairly large chains.

but intergalactic probably not.

Really depends on which version you saw.

We ultimately got "Pizza Hut" as victorious in the franchise wars (initially it was the rat-creature taco franchise, but between cinema release and home dvd release, TB went the way of the dodo burger )

One of the guard books mentions "Soylent viridian" or something - which many take to be the same thing. Since Viridian is a blue-green colour pigment.

Interplanetary fast food? No. Even going from a world to its local moon is the expenditure of thousands of credits and hours of labor. Traveling between planets is an even longer and more expensive journey, and between stars is right out.

While there's a few various animals more-or-less common across the Imperium (the cow-like grox mentioned several times ITT being one), there's not a sense of shared culture or tastes between worlds. What is considered a delicacy on one world (or even a staple of the diet) might be horrific on another.

Restaurants and such, of course, exist, but what they serve and their style will vary from world to world... just like everything else in the Imperium.

Does intergalactic fast-food chains exist in the 40k universe? Probably not! But they do have restaurants, diners, greasy spoons and dive bars, brand names and interplanetary trade.

In certain regions of space, even the most illiterate citizens probably recognize and trust something like the Bork Brand Corned Grox Beef, even if no one knows where it's manufactured and what goes into it. And most civilian vehicles are probably some version of the Zenith Corsair, made in a different planetary system, by the Monolith Guild Corp, at a plant which also makes tractors, elevator components, canned bread and hula hoops.
