Hey all,

Returning player here. Used to play space marines, but now I'm moving on to AM. Looking for some tips on my list below. I'm going for the Steel Legion mechanized look, but many articles and posts recommended to keep an infantry platoon as well.

HQ- Lord Commissar- 65 pts
Boltgun

Troop 1- Infantry platoon-150 pts
Platoon Command Squad- No upgrades- 30 pts
Infantry Squad 1- grenade launcher, mortar- 60 pts
Infantry Squad 2- grenade launcher, mortar- 60 pts

Troop 2- Veteran Squad- 185 pts
Chimera, Grenadiers, 3x Plasma guns

Fast Attack- Armored Sentinel x2- 100 points
Plasma Cannons
Total: 500 points

The plan is to use the Grenadiers in the chimera to harass armor and tough targets up close, while using the long range bombardment of mortars and plasma cannons from the table edge. The Lord Commissar will be attached to the infantry platoon (blob) to prevent them from falling back off the board, while the platoon prevents the sentinels from getting in close combat.

Having never played Astra Militarum before, any recommendations, advice or observations are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Having just one chimera could lead to a lot of easy first bloods.. with it being your only tank..

If you are going mech I'd recommend having multiple veteran squad in chimeras loaded up with melta/ plasma and if you can maybe squeeze in a Russ or Wyvern.

Accept any challenge, No matter the odds

Thanks for the response- what would you take as an HQ choice then? The commissar was really just there to prevent the platoon from falling back.

Based on your recommendations, I came up with the following:

HQ- CCS=135 pts
Chimera
Grenade Launcher x2

Troop 1- Veteran Squad=155 pts
Chimera
Plasma gun x2

Troop 2- Veteran Squad=145 pts
Chimera
Melta gun x2

Heavy- Wyvern Battery=65 pts

Total=500 pts

Opinions? I ran out of points, hence the grenade launchers instead of plasma or melta in the ccs.

Most of whats been said already is pretty solid stuff, i like the look of your latest list as well. You could always give the CSS a heavy weapon instead of the grenade launchers, i think auto cannons are 10 points... gives you a lil extra bit of ranged anti tank threat.

I know this completely alters the aesthetic of the force:
but consider a double Russ list?
Pask in a punisher is an absolute beatstick, and at 500pts is gonna kick ass. pair him with a cheap, mobile partner such as the eradicator (ignores cover, S6 AP4 Lrg Blast ) then fill out troops with veterans, chimeras if you can afford? target saturation is your friend, and AV14 in 500pts is terrifying. Pask does the work, buddy lends a hand, splitfiring if necessary with orders, and troops claim objectives/bubblewrap/push as necessary...

just a suggestion,

For my HQ I run a CCS with a HW team, Vox and MoO and sit in a corner with them

The idea of two russes in the list is good.. but I'd save that for 750 points as you expand your list

Accept any challenge, No matter the odds
