Is it the red legion one? With the eye of Horus on the front?

The Istvaan Legions book is the outdated version of the Age of Darkness Legions book.

You own the latest one, then.

Really? I see most people (here) suggesting the AoD Legion list.

Perhaps he's read (or the people giving him advice) old threads or listened to older podcasts?

That poster in the past has mentioned his stuff being out of date.

I'm confused about this too. The forgeworld site makes it seem like you need both books. Are both needed to play 30k, or just the one with the eye of horus on the front?

That book appears to have the legion rules, special characters, primarchs, etc. Does it contain all rules for wargear, other troops/armor, etc?

Just want to make sure before I spend more $.

If you want to play space marines, you at least need the first book:

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-DE/The-Horus-heresy-legiones-Astartes-Age-of-Darkness-Army-List

This book contains the basic rules, gear, and units available to all of the Space Marine Legions. In theory, you could play with just this and make generic lists. There are a handful of non-legion specific rites of war, but none of the Legion Specific rules. Like, you won't know that Imperial Fists have special rules when shooting with Bolters and their Heavy Support Squads have tank hunters, and so on. You'll be missing out on all of the Legion-Specific characters, rules, rites of war, and units.

If you want to play with the existing legion-specific rules, units, rites of wars, and characters, you ALSO need this book.

The "Army List" book (winged skull with dagger) has the actual army list (tactical squads, tanks, etc) and missions and such, it also has the basic Rites of War and some extras for each legion as well as the base 30k missions. The Legions (eye of horus) book has the special characters/rules for each legion. So you need both.

For example, for my Death Guard the Army List book has the newer "Creeping Death" Rite of War and the non-specific RoW (e.g. Pride of the Legion); the Legions book has the original "The Reaping" RoW and the special characters/units.

What they said. Furthermore, push any thought or reference to 'The Istvaan Legions' book from your minds. That book is out of print and has been replaced by the aforementioned 'Age of Darkness Legions' book. Additionally you may look http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/673599.page here for further information regarding your army and what you will need books wise.

Pretty much what Kronc said.

Forge World and GW in general, really need to come up with some kind of naming convention or something to make it clear which are the most current edition of a book. If you notice, GW never refers to a particular edition of 40K. They always say something like "...refer to the latest Warhammer: 40,000 Rule Book for details". It's an attempt to "future proof" their books, but usually just leads to mass confusion.

Want to be even more confused? Forge World released both those Red Books as Special Edition Black Books with leather covers, silver tipped corners, and gold gilded pages to fit in with the other Horus Heresy books they released. If you are a new player to 30K, and don't care for collectors editions, then don't be fooled, and buy the Red Books.
