hello very nice to meet you all this is my first post and i would like your feedback on my 2000 point army list. also im not entirely sure whether this list is fully legal so i may need to change a few things.

HQ:
Kharn the Betrayer = 160 points

Troops:
5 khorne berzerkers = 105 points
5 khorne berzerkers = 105 points
5 khorne berzerkers = 105 points
5 khorne berzerkers = 105 points

Elites:
Contemptor dreadnought + multimelta = 175 points
Contemptor dreadnought + multimelta = 175 points

Heavy support:
Renegade knight + battlecannon = 375 points
Mastodon = 700 points

Total = 2005 points

the idea behind this army is to have nearly all of the models within the Mastodon including the Berzerkers, Kharn and the Contemptor dreadnoughts. this will hopefully keep them safe until they are close enough to charge or deal massive damage also the renegade knight will wander the battlefield taking out priority targets and clearing the way for the mastodon to reach its destination.

as you may believe during deployment their are only two models on the battle field to begin with however both are very tanky and hard to kill.

i decided to split the khorne berzerker squads into 4 five man teams to gain the benefits from the traitors hate (Maelstrom of Gore) rules.

if you want the rules for the mastodon and the Contemptor dreads the threads are right below:

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/resources/fw_site/fw_pdfs/Horus_Heresy/Contemptor%20talon.pdf

anyway i guess the kind of feedback i want is whether this is a good way to go about playing the game if you think this tactic is viable or maybe useless and also do you think i will lose every game or any changes that should be made.

lastly thank you all very much for your time and effort in reading this post and i hope to return with another post which is even better than the last.

Welcome to Dakka!

Well, its not a typical WE list.
I'd drop the Mastodon. It could be useful in larger battles like apocalypse. But at your pt level its overkill. Berserkers need transports and the Dreads are better with kheres autocannons.

So lets go slowly, and show you why your list is flawed. It is unrefined, and could use significant optimization, among other things.

Firstly, you are relying on Khorne Berserkers to do "massive damage" as you put it yourself. Khorne Berzerkers are suboptimal units, and should be taken only in the situations where they are required as a tax. Since there are multiple other methods to take Kharn than to take 400+ pts of Berzerkers, you should pass.

Since you are going to try to refute this, I will lay out the numbers against a variety of expected targets, Tactical Space Marines, Space Marine Bikers, and Space Marine Heroes in a deathstar type situation.

Berzerkers get a hefty 4 attacks apiece on the charge, at WS5, to boot. Since you're running the Black Crusade Detachment which will give your CSM Hatred Allies of the Imperium, you'll be hitting on 3's with rerolls against typical T4 Space Marines. That's 22 expected hits out of 25 total attacks, and a little less than 15 wounds. Simple math will tell you that 1 unit of 5 Berzerkers with no upgrades will thrash a 5 man unit of Space Marines, but that's expected. You must, however, compare this to equivalents, such as Mark of Khorne Chaos Space Marines. 5 with Marks and no upgrades will run you 85 pts, a 20 pt difference. On the charge that will be 20 attacks (Only!), and about 12 wounds, which is about 4 dead Space Marines. The Khorne Berzerker unit will deal 5 wounds on average, but the average cost of a Space Marine is 15pts. For Khorne Berzerkers, you are adding 20pts to the cost of the unit, for what gain exactly?

As Toughness, or WS, improves for the Space Marines, Khorne Berzerkers are just not up to the fight. At T5 you'll see 22 hit, but only 11ish wounds, 3-4 dead Marines. Against WS 5, that number drops down to 3 wounds total after all those attacks. Khorne Berzerkers statistically don't have the ability to stand up to Elite level units. Against Terminator armor/Artificer Armor? That drops to a paltry 1 wound that may pass through saves.

When the Space Marine Bikes or Heroes swing back (and they will hit you with big hits) you won't have the resiliency to last. Even a Chapter Master on a Bike with a Bike Command Squad will thrash multiple numbers of your Berzerkers, because Berzerkers lack AP3 or AP2 in their hits. Space Marines have access to the tools they need to drop you before and during the close combat.

Yes, Kharn is mighty, but you could do a better job with Chaos Drop pods, or even just a Land Raider. The Berzerker escort is unnecessary and limits your ability to field objectives.

You have 0 Psychic Defense. How do you plan on dealing with deathstars that reroll all their saves?

I would suggest going back to square one and developing a list made to hold objectives, and then put in the fancy tools afterwards. 1 Knight is great, but Chaos had access to Dual Gatling Cannons! Read your codex and optimize your list!
