I've always been a 40ker and have taken many long breaks breaks over my 15 years in this hobby.
This time, after 2 years off I decided to leap into Age of Sigmar. The square bases and large blocks of rank and file have always put me off from
WHFB but this time around the unit sizes have been reduced and bases no longer square!
Going for a cheap force with lots of conversions. I've purchased a box of Get Started! Slaves to Darkness box, 10 marauder horsemen and recently the Khorne Bloodbound half of the
AoS starter. While I love all of the new models in the
AoS kit, I'm not a huge fan of the khorne helmets and the bloodlust & rage motif so I'll convert ALL of the bloodbound models.
Army will consist of:
1 Lord Daemonic Mount - (General) Heavy conversion because where in the starter box or
AoS kit would this come from?
2 Lords of Chaos - one from the Chariot rider and another from the Khorne Lord
1 Sorcerer - basic out of the starter
1 Daemon Prince - Another big conversion job
5 Chaos Knights - basic out of the starter
5 Chosen - from the Blood Warriors
10 Chaos Warriors - basic out of the starter
20 Marauders - from the Blood Reavers
1 Chariot - basic out of the starter with small conversion
10 Horsemen
1 Spawn - using the fleshound by itself
This will give a nice mix of units. Game wise I'm not too sure how they'll play out or points yet, aiming for 1250-1500 for now, but I'm a modeller/painter first so we'll sort that out later
The spawn and daemon price will likely only be used for when the Lords kill the enemy general or if they get killed, hence the 5 leaders in the list
First two leaders
First up, quick paint jobs to test out my color scheme. Did these two quite awhile ago
Minor conversion giving the sword from the sorcerer to the lord, strapping it on his back since the Lord of Chaos warscroll lists him having a chaos sword while the sorcerer doesnt always take one. Plus I dont think I'll be in combat too much with the caster! Snow is quite a bit brighter in the picture from the light reflecting off the white. Head swap on the sorcerer too to make him look a bit more human.
Mounted Lord
I've never done much sculpting other than filling gaps so the Lord on Daemonic Mount was a big challenge. At first I was going to use the gorebeast as the chaos spawn for when the lord died, but for such a beastly model it wouldn't see much table time.
The gorebeast back was sloped down quite significantly so I had to boost it up to horizontal for a rider to sit on properly. I wasn't confident in my monster sculpting skills to build it up so I tried to cover up as much greenstuff with actual bits as possible. Tried lots of different saddles and seats which turned out ugly until I found a Game of Thrones inspired seat backing with the extra chaos knight glaives.
i didnt put the tabard on the Khorne Bloodsecrator, cut the lower legs off at the knee, then the thigh portions from the hip. Plopped the legless torso on a wad of greenstuff for the saddle and attached then filled the legs in riding position. Put some ass-horns (spares from the chariot) onto him to bulk up the rear end and use the former bloodsecrator head-spine-braid as the beast tail. Clipped the banner frrom the left hand and attached a spare knight shield.
I think it came out to be quite
WYSIWYG fitting with a warhammer, runeshield and a monstrous daemonic mount!
