hey everyone

quick question about using dkok deathriders in an astra militarum list

I know the general consensus amongst guard players is that if you want to run rough riders the best option is to ally in death riders. my question is whats the best way to do this?
hq commissar + engineers to fill out the hq and troop requirement and then take the deathrider platoon or is there a more popular/sensible option that I'm missing? i always see mention of using them as allies but never how the rest of the ally requirement is filled out

cheers

There is a special detachment for them if memory serves me correctly. Can't remember exact details, but could do a quick Google to get a general idea of it, or find out which book its in.

Its the death rider squadron detachment from the DKoK siege regiment list.

yeah i saw that i thought it looked ideal but unless I'm mistaken(which i may be as i have been out of the hobby for a while) i cant take that detachment as allies for astra militarum/Imperial guard can I?

i was under the impression that allies had to conform to 1hq, 1 troop and the 0-1 of each other slot?

or am i able to take that special detachment as allies?

cheers

You're confused about the rules. There is no more "one FOC, one allied detachment" rule. Armies are simply composed of detachments (CAD, allied, formations, etc), one of which contains your warlord and is labeled your primary detachment. The "allied detachment" is just one of these types, and has a rule that it can't be your primary detachment or have the same faction as your primary detachment. But you are free to take other combinations: an IG CAD and a DKoK death rider detachment, an IG formation and a Tau CAD and a C:SM formation, three IG CADs and a Tyranids allied detachment, etc.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Ah i see, thanks for the clarification, i guess ive been a bit out of the loop and have been confused by the terms
got to say that aside from a few specific situations the allied detachment seems somewhat obsolete when you can.

multiple cad's from different codexes seems ideal for my situation though

cheers
