Obviously with talk of Sisters getting a release I am wanting to get good at painting black. But my problem is that I usually layer the model and then ink the recesses with nuln oil. I can highlight, but I am very patchy with it and struggle to get fine thin lines. Which basically means I really struggle to paint black. I mean for my Heresy Imperial Fists I actually gave up on the black and went for the yellow because once you layer a solid colour on its good to go. Whereas my black looks really bad because I can't shade the model.
Is there no way to get a (sorry if I sound stupid) slightly lighter shade of black and then use nuln oil in the recesses?

I mean I was even considering getting an airbrush because I know you can get more vivid metallic colors and gloss out of it.

Basically I don't want to just spray them chaos black and lightly dry brush them grey.

Not sure, maybe add a small amount of white to make a very dark grey? You might get a better response from the painting and modelling forum.

I mean if you look at artwork for Sisters, that's clearly what they've done because the armors not all one shade of black.
