Hello everyone! For fluff reasons I am building a Myrmidax magos/archmagos model, but I need advice on the build. For most other Orders of Techno-Arcana it seems obvious what the good choices are, but for the Myrmidax I am at a loss. I can tell it's about spamming powerful, heavy weapons, but the Mechanicum heavy weapons are varied and it can be difficult do decide what to do. Currently I am thinking 2x Photon Thruster, Machinator Array, and then flavour to taste. But I don't know...

Archmagos Prime
Myrmidax, Cyber-familiar, Rad Grenades, Paragon Blade, Machinator Array, Abeyant, 2x Phased Plasma-Fusil
[295]

So, you have a 2+/3++ T6 model with It Will Not Die. It is Relentless, so it shoots both weapons full, meaning 6 S6 AP3 shots at 24". Good for shredding Marines. Also, has a Flamer and Inferno Pistol.

In CC, it swings in with a S5 AP2 weapon that causes ID on 6's. Rad Grenades drop enemy toughness, making it easier to wound. After that, it can make two S5 AP2 Unwieldy, Shred, Armorbane attacks. Oh yea, and it has Hatred (Everything!) and Precision Shots 5+.

Also, gets Night Vision, +2 Battlesmith rolls, and MTC.

Gross, right?

Just throw him in with some Myrmidon Secutors and have them roll around in a Traiaros. Solid gold.

I considered that, but the hard part is the Plasma Fusils. Part of the reason I went with Photon Thrusters is for Blind and sniping out enemy characters; with 2 plasma fusils he's just an overgrown Secutor.

That's funny because I'm building him out of a Secutor model.

Anyways, I am uncertain about Close Combat Upgrades. I always take a Powerfist or Chainfist with a paragon blade for the extra attack for an extra 5 or 10 points, which imo is worth it...

... except that the Myrmidax isn't that great a combat, and neither are Secutors.

Against squads of mooks, the paragon blade is a waste, so again you end up with a 300 point Secutor, and against anything that is actually good in combat, 3 attacks with a paragon blade just doesn't cut it (get it?) even with the Machinator Array afterwards.

I guess my question is: "what does the Myrmidax do that a regular Secutor or Destructor couldn't do for 1/3 or less the points?

So essentially, don't ask for help if you know all the answers.

Toss on a Chainfist, gives him anti-tank in CC, which is handy. Change his weapons to whatever suits you - PPF just make the shooting consistent, as that it how I see Secutors often equipped. He isn't going to be much more than a glorified Secutor, because that is exactly what the Myrmidax is per the fluff.

Here's another question:

Could a Malagran fill in as a Warlord? I feel like he has a more well-defined role that is actually lacking in the army list, rather than a Secutor +1 or a Destructor -1, which is how the Myrmidax feels. Do you think a Malagran could have 'grown' out of the Auxilia Myrmidon, or should a build a whole new model from scratch for mr Malagran if that is how I choose to proceed?

And I suppose your right. My query is mostly just checking if anyone else saw any merit to the Myrmidax. Things like the Ordinator, Lachrimallus, Macrotek, etc. seem really good, with well-defined niches and roles, but things like the Archimandrite and the Myrmidax are just like ????? why are these good?

Archimandrite is there for the IWND on vehicles. That is about it.

The Malagra just makes the model better in combat... a little.

Really, I would just take Scoria and call it a day.

Ahaha!

This is for my fluff though. The Archimandrite's IWND is meh on an army where if you're playing lots of vehicles, the Ordo Reductor is a better sub-faction anyways.

The Malagran, though, actually gets good stuff. +1 WS and Attack are fantastic, and Preferred Enemy (Characters) goes from meh to solid gold after the new FAQ because it's bascially Preferred Enemy (Legion Squads), Monster Hunter is great with a Paragon Blade because any monster (i.e Cybernetica robot) will be instant deathed on a 6 and now you get to try again for more 6s, and Precision Strikes lets you challenge to pin down a dirty character but target swings outside of the challenge to actually kill stuff and win combat for the sweep.

I think Malagrans are great. I just wish there was a good model for them that I didn't have to kitbash out of parts.

Well, it is a hobby, so kit-bashing is part of the process.

Get some guitar wire, green stuff rollers, and some extra AdMech bits and go to town.

Hell, convert over a robot or something bigger, drape a greenstuff cloak on him, and make him more than just a Myrmidon+ and a truly unique thing.

So you think a Malagran could lead an Auxilia Myrmidon covenant?

I'm okay with scratchbuilding a model.

Because the Prefecture Magisterium is different than the Auxilia Myrmidon.
