If you want to roll out Java SE in a big deployment, as you would following development of your app, then you’ll need Microsoft Windows Installer Enterprise JRE Installer – and that’s not part of the free Java SE.

“People aren’t aware,” Guarente told The Reg. “They think Java is free - because it’s open source so you can use it. It’s not that the contracts are unclear; there’s a basic misunderstanding."

I'd imagine there are n>1 Java goofs floating around here making money off applications. If for some howling reason you're using Java as the foundation of your web service, be vewy vewy careful as you may in fact owe Oracle all the money.

Java just wont die.

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone major-money making enterprise would continue to use java. Especially since, there's a threat of code-stealing as it's really easy to reverse-engineer the compiled app to readable code.

It's good for learning, I'll give it that (although I prefer C++). But for profit based enterprises, I wouldn't use it.

Commodity programmers.

You get java monkeys factory stamped from Uni and College, and generally speaking can have them around doing the trivial fire fighting until either attrition removes them or natural selection elevates them into an un payable bracket. Generally speaking the fire fighting will work because for all its flaws, java is at least straightforward enough to diagnose and look busy fixing.

Then you can start again since budget for headcount is generally more flexible than for product investment. Up to a point the same was true for C# programmers, but i've not encountered it as much, at least in my work.
