So after kicking around the idea of a death guard army, I got the red books, did some research and watched some batreps (ok a lot of batreps). I Like the deathguard and all, but the one that really caught my eye was Alpha Legion. The ability to decide on the fly how to face your opponent is super attractive to me. I would have liked to play with coils of the hydra, but I'm just getting started and am a few rhinos short. It's basically the Calth box + an extra mk IV squad + a land raider they pinched err... borrowed from another chapter.

Lots of dirty tricks to be had, my saboteur can use his combat augment array to pop a non super heavy vehicle the turn he enters, and he is armed with a combi melta for a possible second vehicle the turn he enters if i roll well. 2 10 man marksmanship veterans with 2 heavy bolters per squad should give me lots of chances for precision shots. The remaining vet squad is weapon masters with venom spheres, and the sgt has a power weapon, they can be deployed in the land raider if need be, or on foot to charge/counter charge as needed. The head hunters are all armed with combi meltas, so they can be infiltrated near enemy vehicles or high priority targets. The praetor and his squad can be deployed in the land raider if the opponent has lots of anti-TEQ weapons, they are all armed with combi-plasma and chain fists, which can make for a nasty charge on a relentless unit. The rest are fairly straight forward, Missile launchers deployed to assist in anti personnel or anti vehicle work, and the dreadnaught is more or less a distraction, albeit a really awesome one. My plan to get to 2500 is to add Alpharius (or is he Omegon, who knows), and some rhinos, maybe another tank, or maybe something interesting like the ultra marine terminators that all have cyclone missile launchers.

What do you guys think, do i seem to have a good handle on it, or is there something I've missed?

Hey mate. List doesn't seem bad given the models you have.
Headhunters are a bit overpriced for what they do, I tried a few times to run 10 but they rarely got close to regaining their points.
Also you can't run relics outside of Campaigns without your opponents agreement, I doubt you will find too many that agree to you getting a free kill on their vehicle.

Dynat is great! Also be wary with Battlescribe, it's currently a wee bit broken with Horus Heresy (try adding a LoW to a regular AoD army like you are legally allowed to...).

I am not convinced paying for Banestrike rounds on the terminators are worth it, you are taking a 6" range cut for the 1/6 chance to be wounding at ap3? And you gotta pay for it?!

Where are you planning to stick Dynat, on one hand he is okay in combat (I say okay, I'd take a Praetor with a Paragon Blade, Power Dagger, and Digital Lasers for combat over him any day). On the other hand he is one of the few sources of the Cognis to make a squad shoot at BS5 - You might be spending 200 points to do it, but it is still a viable option (certianly made a huge difference to the Tyrant Siege termies i ran last night).

Yeah Dynat also helps the saboteur, +1 to vehicle damage rolls while the model is in the enemy's deployment zone (and reroll sweeping advances while in the enemy's deployment zone, but that one comes up less often). So even without the relic the saboteur has a 1 in 3 chance to drop a vehicle the second he enters and then a 50/50 chance to kill another if he can get a pen with his combi melta. As for banestrike, my thought is it only has to work once or twice to pay for itself, but the debate is how much do you lose because of the reduced range.

To really take advantage of the harrowing I suppose your opponent would need to deploy in denied flank while you were infiltrating. You would also need to be able to reliably pen his vehicles and beat his units in Close combat, at which point you probably don't need the harrowing. Still the thought of blowing something up with a rear armor bolter hit is amusing.

Do you run any rapier batteries? Grav seems the logical choice, but mortar and siege consul Phosphex is tempting (if insanely expensive). Or should I just pony up and get a sicaran battle tank, or scorpius pattern whirlwind.

So I think this will be my Final pass at the army list until I get a few battles under my belt (right now I'm in build paint build mode). A list of changes

I like the idea of a headhunter team if not the overcost version in the rules, so I decided to fill that roll with a vet squad armed with combi-meltas and the marksman trait. They will deploy via outflank, creep on any enemy tanks, and pop them with five melta shots. If I choose army wide infiltrate I'll probably give them machine killers to deal with melta resistant vehicles.

Added the praetor back in (in addition to dynat), so he can add some weight to the terminators, the terminators and praetor will be deep striking thanks to Dynat's warlord trait, with four vox locations so they don't scatter into trouble, and combi plasma to give them some punch as soon as they land.

Added a legion command squad instead of an entire unit of vets, same idea but now with the chosen rule, free artificer armor for everyone, and a mini consul in the form of standard bearer. They can hang with dynat (to prevent the rampant assassinations I see in batreps), or infiltrate separately if that's my chosen rule. I worry that five is too few but with 4 attacks each on the charge with rending weapons, 2+ saves, fearless, WS 5, initiative 5 in challenges, they seem pretty fierce at least on paper. They are certainly the right price at 155 points for all of that + melta bombs.

I didn't feel like the land raider was doing much for the list other than being a magnet for my opponents anti-vehicle weapons, so I got rid of it.

So this seem like a decent take all comers list at 2k?
