Hi there

I’m a returning hobbyist, currently just painting Ultramarines but looking to plan my purchases so I could have a vaguely competitive army in the future. I’ve already got a bunch of tactical marines, a devastator box (which I’ve built with 2 x Lascannon, 2 x Grav Cannon, (in the future I’ll get another box to give me the option of 4 x Grav or 4 x Lascannon (and possibly 4 x Missile Launchers), but not a priority at the moment) and a chaplain with jump pack. I would like to keep them in the list. I also want to get the boxed game Stormcloud Attack so would like to include a storm talon too. I’ve put together a 1000 point list including the miniatures I’ve got, then a 2000 point list to build once I’ve reached 1000 points. It was built using Battlescribe (hoping to get the Codex for Christmas) so hoping I haven’t missed anything!

1000 point army

HQ – Chaplain with jump pack (105pts) to accompany:
Elite – 5 x Vanguard Veterans, Jump packs, various Melee weapons (150pts)

Troops – 5 x Scouts with camo cloaks and sniper rifles (70pts)
8 x Tactical Marines, Boltguns and Drop Pod (147pts)
8 x Tactical Marines, Boltguns and Drop Pod (147pts)

Heavy – 6 x Devastators, 2 x Grav Cannon and 2 x Lascannon with Razorback (Lascannon) (269pts)

Fast – Storm Talon with Assault Cannon and Heavy Bolters (110)

Additional 1000 points to make a 2000 point army

HQ – Chief Librarian Tigurius (165pta) to accompany:
Elite – 5 man Command Squad with Apothecary, Champion and Standard with Rhino (170pts)

Troops
8 x Tactical Marines, Boltguns and Drop Pod (147pts)
8 x Tactical Marines, Boltguns and Drop Pod (147pts)

Heavy – 3 x Centurion Devastators, Grav Cannons and Hurricane Bolters (240pts)) note – Devastator Marines all come with Lascannons now

Fast – Drop Pod for Centurions (35pts)
Storm Hawk Interceptor Las-Talon, Assault Cannon and Skyhammer Missile Launcher (130pts)

This leaves about 35 points for additional gear

I’d welcome your thoughts!

Okay, as a fellow Ultramarines player shopping around in the region of 750-1000pts; It's interesting to note how similar our core starting forces are!
(DM me for a more detailed comparison?)

anyway;
Core looks strong, and limiting the points you're going to spend on the vanguard veteran squad is a smart move. God knows that unit can get pricey when you start sticking thunder hammers on miniatures!

notes:
-I'd really want some punch in those 2 bolter marine squads. trimming back elsewhere (an ablative wound from the Dev squad?) affords you a meltagun for one squad; and the 30th anniversary Imperial Marine is essentially a free weapon upgrade for squad 2. Don't have the mini? Proxy/make your own!

-The scouts are a good staple.

-Stormtalon Gunships are one of my favorite marine units; and I find they frequently kill their points back and yield a profit. however; The Sky hammer missile launchers are by far the most versatile, and heavy hitting weapon option. also consider the Lascannon? I never used it before my restart, and can honestly say it surprises me.

1k, so far so good.

Tiggy is a BOSS and the prime reason people take our 'swiss army knife' chapter tactics that everyone else can (sort of) get at by filling out a battle demi-company...which you need two of for the Gladius Strike Formation and the free transports that it bestows.
why in the hell of it is he rolling round with a sub-par footslogging command squad??
as a Mastery Lvl 3 Psyker; He's a hell of a boost to the centurions, and they form a mini-deathstar. -just bear in mind that the unit is dropping in at 4 models strong; so make sure they're toughened up by invisibility or other such psy-fethery... he's also essentially a 165pt performance boost; so make sure he counts once tableside.
Lose the command squad. they're only gonna slow you down.
the only reason to take a command squad is on bikes; as an entourage for (Smash******) -see online elsewhere for the Iron hands beatstick of death.

-2nd lot of Tacticals want weapons too! heavies or Specials, but preferably specials to maintain mobility?

Centurion Devastators are can die when enough resource is poured into them; but they have an ungodly ability to put the hurt into strong units. give them some durability with Tiggy and you're laughing.

Have never tried out the storm hawk interceptor; good luck?

Devastators look good.

hope this helps,
GamerGuy

Thanks GamerGuy, I appreciate the response

Good idea adding a special weapon to the tactical squads, I think that'd be better than a heavy so I can maintain movement flexibility

The command squad was the one I was least sure about, I added it as much as a visual leadership group rather than effectiveness on the table, I've seen a battle report where Tiggy was grouper with Centurions, itwas pretty devastating. Any suggestions on where my army might be lacking where I could drop that 170? I love the look of a predator, so might consider that, or a second devastator squad. Or maybe I leave it till I've played a couple of games and see what might be missing.

Skyhammer missiles for the StormTalon sound a good investment too, my first couple of lists had a whirlwind and a few extra marines but after looking a bit more closely at the rules I knew I wanted a StormTalon in there!

Interestingly when I was playing 40K back in the 90's Space Marines never interested me, but reading the fluff and the darker modern paint jobs really drew me in this time round, plus those Drop Pods are so awesome, I don't remember them at all from my first time round

I've just looked at the rules for 30th anniversary marine, wow, and for 14pts! Added!
