I saw the "Roll out your cool ideas for fluffy armies" thread in the 40k Background section, and thought Age of Sigmar could use such a thread as well! After all, with all the Grand Alliances, factions and subfactions to choose from, there's bound to be some cool armies to create, isn't it?

Here's an example:

The Congregation of the Holy Blood:

Once, the Congregation was nothing more than a small parish, formed by the few human survivors of a Sigmar-worshipping civilization in Shyish. During the Age of Chaos, they had retreated into the mountains, finding refuge in an abandoned monastery, hidden from Chaos' watchful eyes. The community survived and thrived there for a while, and the parishioners held faith in Sigmar, even as the God-King abandoned the Realms and retreated to Azyr.

But their peaceful existence was not to last. The hordes of Chaos, their thirst for battle yet to be sated, began to scour the Realms in search for prey. A warband dedicated to Nurgle eventually discovered their location, and soon great plagues were unleashed upon the area, turning the parishioners into twisted Plague Zombies.

In desperation, the community's Warrior Priest (and de-facto leader) prayed to Sigmar for guidance, hoping that the God-King would send aid to his faithful servants.

But it was not the God-King who answered his pleas.

A mysterious stranger appeared before him, and promised to save him and his charges - on one condition: the entire parish had to consume a tiny bit of blood from a chalice the stranger had given the Priest.

With grief in his heart, the Priest accepted, as he knew it to be the only choice. That night, he organized a great feast for all the parishioners, and none except he knew of the blood mixed into the food.

The following day, the Congregation stepped into the pale sunlight. Their skin had turned an unhealthy grey, and their eyes shone darkly in the morning's light. From the monastery's graveyard rose hordes of Skeletons, and from its infirmaries stumbled Zombies, their plague-ridden bodies now turned against the Dark Gods. When the Nurglites were finally defeated, a Vampire Lord -the mysterious stranger who had turned the Sigmarite priest- and his retinue came to inspect their new allies. The Congregation collectively bowed in supplication, and began preaching a new creed: that of the Holy Blood, and that of its Vampiric Saints.

TL;DR: Sigmar's monks get turned into Vampire-worshippers. Would feature corrupted Fanatics, a Vampiric Warrior Priest and zombies representing the turned parishioners.

So, what do you guys think? Share your own cool army ideas below!

Heh, it's a vampirc-twist for me as well. We both should do it

For over a decade I've wanted to do a not-Chaos "Khorne" army for years. Basically a Blood Dragon vampire and his posse show up in some hamlet in the Chaos Wastes that worships Khorne in some of his aspects or one of his princes, kill the local elite (chieftain, household fighters, maaaybe the seer) and calls himself the Usurpator from then on. Since they're used to weird behaviour by those touched by the gods the new subjects don't question the "ritual" blood drinking, going out at night, huge bat-like spawns and feral, blood and flesh craving mongrels turning up from the Wastes to rally to his banners.

In short I want to toy with the idea of a hugely arrogant vampire making mockery of the "cattle" he rules by openly flaunting his vampirism while in-universe people won't simply go, oh, wait, the new boss is clearly not a champion of our deity but a vampire, page ten of the armybook shows the following differences clear as day. And both BD and Khorne are cool.

Modelling-wise the time might just be right, Blood Warriors with their fangs and halfhelms ghouls and Black Knights in plastic, the sexy vamp from the zombie dragon kit combined with 6th ed Archaon, the proliferation of bits sites providing parts, like the chariot horses (who simply look EVIL), it's just a question of combining it all.

Very small groups of even more baroque and dangerous looking "warriors" that are in fact lesser vampires, barbarians, feral men, some Varghulf (yes, I'm one of those few freaks who likes them), some dark knights on muscled steeds, and as much as I hate it for killing WHFB and the setting, AoS makes it kinda possible to run some small units and play, with e.g. 5 of those vamp warriors as Skullreapers. Changing between Chaos and Death rules is easy, and running the feral men as actual ghouls from Death or adding skellies is possible if I want to thanks to the unbound army comp.

I might really do it one day.

Looking for a Skaven Doomwheel banner to repair my Nurgle knights.

My Fire Aelves are a survivalist faction of a previously expansive and warlike empire following their phoenix queen into battle. From times of myth they were led by the immortal phoenix priestess who would take up the mantle of queen in times of battle they excelled in fire craft, their very personalities shaped by the fact that from birth they were fighting the elements, roving beasts and rival tribes for their rights to exist. A willing part of sigmars grand alliance when it first formed their were noble warriors with little fear relishing the chance to do battle with the great enemy, and yet when the word came to retreat to Azyr many of them waited too long, evacuating their entire empire before setting off for the great gates in Aqysh. They were beset by Chaos Marauders the whole way, moving with as much speed as possible but such a large refugee train was hard to move at pace. When they reached the gate they discovered Azyrites attempting to seal it from the otherside already. The Phoenix Queen tapped into the very heart of Aqysh, the powers wracking her immortal body as she clawed the gate back open, a beacon of defiance against sigmar as she sought to hold the gate so every member of her kind could retreat to safety. And yet the Azyrites could not relent to her petulence, every moment the gate remained open risked chaos forces gaining a foothold into the realm of heaven.

The deadlock continued for hours, dwarven engineers using arcana machines to attempt to shut the gate down from their sides, the phoenix queen bathed in fire using her magicks to carve it back open. It was however to prove to be a doomed enedevour, somewhere in the maelstrom an archer drew sights from the Azyrian side onto the Queen, letting loose an arrow that pierced her heart and with a blinding light both gates exploded into rubble.

Less than quarter of ther number escaped that day, and the rest of the Fire Aelves are presumed dead with their queen. And yet rumours persist of an army aligned with order but gathering the disillusioned, Sigmars Abandoned, his unloved, unwanted allies that he left to rot when the great gates sealed. Those who have spent centuries alone fighting the darkness and have yet endured.

As for the Phoenix Queen, if she was immortal before tapping into the heart of fire, before being struck by an Azyrian bolt... what she is now is anyones guess.

Do share once you've gotten their backstory figured out amazingturtles

Speaking of the Stormcasts, I've personally always thought that they'd be much more interesting if they were deployed in small numbers alongside their Freeguild allies rather than in big groups. They'd form the elite shock troops of a human army, deployed where no mortal soldier could achieve victory, challenging the mightiest of the Chaos hordes. Fluff-wise one could play with how the mortal men and women of the army deal with the SE; maybe some of them are unnerved by their emotionless appearance, or maybe they worship them as the living embodiment of their god? After all, the Stormcast Eternals are both the golden exemplars who the mortals look up to as well as the embodiment of Sigmar's wrath, which could descend upon them one day should they be found wanting...

The Knights Of The Repented Sin: Stormcast Eternals:

"Forged while Mallus hung low and dark, the Knights are something of an oddity among the Stormcast of Sigmaron. The Knights are forged from criminals, murderers and, in one extreme case, a Bloodreaver. Every member has, at some point in their short and painful lives scratching a living from the wastes of the Realms, committed a grievous crime of some kind. However, once Sigmars holy light reached them, they turned from their sinful ways to worship, and died gloriously in battle against Sigmars enemies. Now reformed, they are sent into the worst battlefields the Realms have to offer, to try and atone for their mistakes in life."

I thought this up when I heard about a Nurgle lord who was accepted as a Stormcast, and decided to make it an entire Stormhost. They are lead by Ollgren Yatminth, a serial killer from Shyish, and have dark blue armour with some pale sections scrawled with writing.

Some time in the new year, I'm going to start putting together a Death army. I don't have a fully back story worked out, but so far the idea is for it to be sort of an unquiet dead force of nature type thing. Probably starting off with the Malignants start collecting box and add in other ghostly, ghouish, zombie and skeleton type stuff, but not so much monstrous undead. So basically "close to the surface undead".

Keep the ideas coming guys!

I've come up with another idea for a Death army, this time for the Flesh-Eater Courts.

The Sightless Throne

Buried deep beneath the earth, hidden from the sun's light, festers a depravity and madness that knows no equal. The King of the Sightless Throne rules over a vast network of tunnels and caverns, home to wicked, cannibalistic monstrosities that were once simple men and women. Pushed into the depths of the earth by the forces of Chaos and trapped there by circumstance, these unlucky human survivors had to find a new form of sustenance, which they found in the warm flesh and blood of their kin.

The years of darkness have taken their toll on the once-human dwellers, both physically as psychologically. Their bodies are misshapen masses of flesh and bone, their hands formed into wicked talons capable of digging through the hardest layers of rock. They lost their sight aeons ago, the space where their eyes once were now blank. Their blindness is compensated through the use of echolocation, the gruesome clicking sound of which is usually the last thing their victims hear before serrated teeth plunge into their flesh.

Very soon I am going to do a Nurgle force, mixed daemon + mortal. I am currently behind themed 1k point forces as "the" way to go for the moment (along with themed scenarios/mini-campaigns). I'm also a huge fan of the "Stillmania" approach of days gone by (I still have those three old White Dwarfs where Nigel Stillman builds a heavily themed Bretonnian force, and I love them they are my prized possessions) where you have a heavily themed army with a strong cohesive look. So I came up with this, as sort of a homage to the old Realm of Chaos warbands:

(imagine O Fortuna playing while reading the little fluff blurb in italics for best effect)

The Saga of the Pale Rider
I looked, and behold a pale horse. And the one that sat on it was Death. And Hell followed with him.

From the mists of time comes a tale of dread, passed down from generations immemorial. A rider clad in bone-coloured armor, a funeral shroud the sickly colour of new death draped about his shoulders, his face obscured by a rusting mask of chainmail and crowned with horns, one full and one broken, riding atop a ghastly steed ripe with decay and rot and carrying a corroded scythe with which to steal life from the living. A terrible creature that sits between this world and the infernal realm of Chaos, blessed by the lord of plagues to brings creeping death to the land.

Premise
The goal is to create an oldschool Chaos Warband reminiscent of the 80s “Realm of Chaos” books, with a strong visual theme and eye towards narrative play. The core of the army is 1000 points roughly (although Matched Play does not factor into the idea) to encourage small point narrative armies at the GW shop.

In Realm of Chaos fashion, the army will tell the tale of The Pale Rider and his warband of followers. The warband should be built to allow for special characters as powerful champions of Nurgle notice the growing warband.

Army Composition
The army composition should try to be a mixed force where appropriate, starting off as a mixed Daemon and Mortal army. Depending on releases Beastmen and Skaven may be added, in particular Clans Pestilens to provide some additional ranged support with their artillery, but potential exists for converted Clans Skryre Stormfiends if a more competitive approach is desired. All models will have the NURGLE keyword or be suitably converted to look like followers of Nurgle.

Right now the 1k point list looks like this (units will be suitably named at a later date):

Harbinger of Decay (General)
20x Plaguebearers
3x Plague Drones
3x Nurglings
10x Chaos Warriors w/Halberds and Shields
5x Putrid Blightkings

Representing a daemonic cohort following the half-daemon Rider, and a mortal group of evil warriors touched by Nurgle (with the Blightkings representing the equivalent to Chosen) that were corrupted by the Harbinger's influence.

The goal is to keep the army small but as the notes say I have plans to expand it by adding some Pestilens skaven with war machines (the fluff there would be a breakaway clan that actually worship Nurgle and not the Horned Rat, since I always thought that Clan Pestilens were Nurgle-worshipping Skaven anyways), and also if I wanted to I have ideas to convert Stormfiends into "Plaguefiends". If GW ever releases Pestigors I would look at including them too, and in fact might add a suitably converted Gors + Shaman to represent them. I really want to go for an oldschool mixed Chaos force although I'm not sure how that will work on the tabletop due to synergies.

Speaking of angry trees, what do you guys think of angry trees on fire?

The Emberwood Host

Fire. All is fire.

When the Chaos invaders came for the Realm of Life, they did so with steel and flame. Beautiful gardens and forests were burned to ash, the green hills blackened and the sky itself darkened. Those who could ran for the temporary safety of other realms, but the flora and fauna of Life's own realm could not abandon their home. Their mournful cries lashed out into the heavens as their bodies were rent, broken, and turned to dust.

Now, decades later, the embers still sizzle and crack in the fire-touched wastes. As Alarielle's awakening stirs the Realm back to life, so too does it stir the ashes of these once grand forests. From the dust rise Dryads, grey and black-scorched husks whose eyes and bodies are alight with smouldering flame. Their warcry is the vengeful roar of life once smothered, and as they throw themselves at their enemies their wooden bodies burn with eternal fire, condemning all who oppose them to the fate they once endured.

I am actually doing something a bit like this, although the fluff behind my army is a bit different. The visual inspiration are the redwood forests of California. The bark is gorgeous, and they often have really stunning moss formations on the trunk. Also, fire is an important part of the redwood lifecycle and redwood trees can actually survive severe burning. There are redwoods that are totally hollowed out by fire that are still alive and sprouting new growth.

So visually I'm using the redwood bark color combined with mossy portions and burnt/ashy portions. Some models are totally burnt, others are totally whole, and others are partially burnt. This is the only unit that I have "finished" so far (OK, the banner is not finished...) http://imgur.com/r/ageofsigmar/MHSg7

I haven't totally settled on the fluff for this army yet, but my working concept is that the Sylvaneth wrested control of a grove of incredibly ancient redwoods from the forces of Nurgle, but even after the daemons were removed the groves were still ridden with plague, blight, and parasites. The only choice was to burn everything to cleanse the infection. Hopefully some of the trees will survive and still more might be restored through the intervention of Sylvaneth spirits and the energies of Ghyran itself. I rather like the twist of the Sylvaneth starting the cleansing fire rather than the interlopers burning the woods.

That sounds awesome! I also love the twist of the Sylvaneth starting the fire! Fire is so often associated with destruction but it is also very much a tool of purification and reforming

Keep the ideas coming, everyone!

The human forces have been underrepresented thus far, so here's an idea for a non-Chaos barbarian tribe:

The Beastmasters of Ghur-Ghalan

In the Realm of Beasts, only the strong survive. In the outskirts of this wild and treacherous realm reside human tribes who have learned to survive in their homerealm's harsh climate, despite the many challenges it throws at them on a daily basis.

The Beastmasters of Ghur-Ghalan have adopted a hunter-warrior culture in which all is subordinate to the Great Hunt. They stalk the land in search for ever-greater prey to catch and subdue, adding them to the impressive stock of murderous beasts they have already acquired. In times of war the hunter-warriors of the tribe unleash these beasts upon their adversaries, hailing them as the embodiment of nature's wrath.

I really love seeing this kind of thread, the kind that gets people to use their imaginations for once. Thanks very much OP, keep up the good work!

Got a few ideas of my own for a bunch of armies I feel like developing some day, but for now let's start with Chaos and Death:

in both cases the theme was "tainted nobility", with different color schemes and backgrounds.

1. Death
Start with a Nagash centerpiece, but painted with ceramic white armor with gold trim, richly colored books, and healthy, tanned skin -> the Pope hat just spoke to me after seeing the Nagash owned by a friend of mine. Combine this with massed Ghouls and Flesh Eater Courts with the same glowing skin tones, possibly with looted (kitbashed) silver armor and weapons. Oh yeah, and lots of vampire Ladies, Blood Knights, and Coven Thrones! Got to get that "fallen nobles" vibe going.

That's all I got on that front, just something that came to me in about 30 seconds a few weeks ago. I still can't convince the guy to paint his Nagash.

2. Chaos
In short: not-Sigvald leads his kingdom of prosperity and success into utter ruin, with enslaved Skaven and Slaanesh daemons.

The man himself (ceramic white armor with Gehenna trim, Burnished Gold/ Platinum sword, and, erm, shiny shield) is a bored princeling, probably somewhere like the 4th in line to the throne. There have been no wars for generations so the kingdom grew fat and rich (you know this story by now) and our boy not-Siggy is looking for something to alleviate the tedium of success on a ur-gold platter.

Enter the chaos worshippers

Bored antisig started consorting with these agents, infiltrators, and sorcerors and basically reached a conclusion that only by leading his people to war could he really feel like enjoyment/ find purpose in life/ be the best he can be/ blah blah blah.

Assassinations, dark magic, evil cults, father dead in hunting accident, oldest brother murdered, and the other two choosing the temple of Sigmar rather than leading the kingdom later, and not-Sig is Crowned Prince in a court full of warlocks, cultists, and warlords all itching for a scrap. Without further ado our new Prince pretty much declared war on anything nearby, and a few things only accessible by Realmgate, sealing a legacy as the man who led an entire empire into unbridled, pointless, wild and suicidal rush towards ruin, all but ensuring the wealth of his nation would keep the wheels of war turning for eternity (stay tuned to find out if he becomes a Daemon Prince).

Because AntiSiggy was bored, a continent sized Stalingrad was brought to the realm of Beasts. Let's take a look at that army shall we:

- Warriors of Chaos; I wanted these to be the "Elite" section of the army, as reflected by their Burnished Gilded armor, rich Purple cloth and capes, and jet black details and markings. Mainly made up of Warriors and Knights--the Huscarl and Jarls respectively, these guys are the inner circle of the Bonnie Princes army. oh, and don't forget the sorceror and the Chariots from the Start Collecting box, they also get the treatment.

- Daemons; 90% Slaanesh, and just like with the ghouls its going to be healthy skin color palettes for the flesh areas, ceramic white base for the armor with bright gold trims, and something light and colorful for the claws (haven't decided yet). The supermobile core.

- Skaven; in light of the upcoming reboxing of Island of Blood I have a reason to round out my Skaven forces. These guys represent a Helot or slave army conquered by the Prince's followers early in his campaign. again, purple cloth for most units + mid tone green hoods, rusted weapons and darkened bronze armor with the clanrat unit leaders getting gilded armor, the warlock and packmaster have white lab coats under their bronze armor, and all the warpstone is purple. the rat ogres, bar one, are to be given tanned skin with some gloss effect - twisted and healthy. These guys are the expendable masses of this unified army, easily killed, easily replaced, and waiting for their chance to overthrow this bored tyrant and make him into their next science project.

That's all I got for now.

Awesome ideas, guys!

Here's two of my own:
SkitterFlay Clan
Spoiler:

Deep within the darkness of the realms lurk many horrors that range from mundane horrors made of flesh to creatures beyond mortal comprehension. The age of chaos saw these evils either multipled or slain to make way for something worse.

There are however exceptions, horrors within the deep that not only survive the odds but grow stronger for it. That's the origin of the SkitterFlay Grots and how they adapted to hunt down the chaos creatures that invade their pairs.

With growing numbers and skill they hunt down Skaven and chaos beasts to add their tanned hides to themselves and their squigs while infecting their bodies with a special mushroom that feeds off chaos magic and drives the eater into a berserk fury.

They've recently found their way into the Skaven tunnels that travel through the void. Not out of pure accident it seems as a malicious leader has arose in their ranks and whose cunning is said to match Mork's. He knows the tunnels lead to places beyond their normal reach and if they were to claim them then his clan could go farther than just skinning rats...

With the latest AOS releases (and some promising upcoming ones), I figured that this thread could use an update!

Here's another idea I recently had, this time for a Khorne Bloodbound one:

The Bloodwolves

In the last days of the millennia-spanning Age of Chaos, the remnants of humanity were ruthlessly hunted down and slaughtered by roving warbands of the Dark Powers. Most prevalent amongst them were the crazed worshippers of Khorne, whose bloodlust led them to pursue their prey to the furthest edges of the Realms.

One of these warbands chased a flock of humans into one of the coldest and most inhospitable of mountain ranges, but lost track of their quarry in a great blizzard. Stuck upon the mountain, in the icy cold, without food or prey, the Bloodbound became restless, madness creeping into their veins as they struggled to keep their murderous impulses at bay.

At the very moment that their rage could no longer be denied and the warband threatened to tear itself asunder, a pack of mighty wolves strayed into their view. With reckless abandon did the Bloodbound throw themselves upon the beasts, ripping them apart in an orgy of madness and gore, singing their praises to the Blood God as they gorged themselves upon the flesh and blood of the wolves.

But that same night, when the pale moon rose high above the mountains, the Bloodbound discovered that they had made a grave mistake.

They woke to find their own bodies changing and morphing into twisted new forms in the moon's light, and they screamed as they began to transform into beasts not unlike the ones they had slain earlier that day. Claws and fangs replaced hands and teeth, and hair grew thicker and rougher, covering their skin like an animal's pelt.

When the transformation was done, half of the warband was dead; the other half had become monsters beyond compare. From that day forwards, those mountains would be the hunting grounds of the Bloodwolves, those who were once men, and are no longer...

TL;DR: Werewolves of Khorne. I think one of those big Slaughterpriests would look amazing with a wolf head, some extra fur and big, clawed hands.

The people of the Freeguilds have been personally sheltered and nurtured by Sigmar, and through his wisdom and protection in the realm of Azyr th has led them to recover the customs and armaments of their ancestors. But what of those human empires that exist outside Sigmaron? How did these kingdoms survive millennia without contact with their patron? In such an age of darkness and the loss of knowledge to the passage of history, how did these valiant few carve out their existence and survive the touch of Chaos?

The answer: Through rigorous adherence to ideals of honor, nobility, harmony, and faith these besieged lords were able to survive and start to take back the realms with their own hands, ever awaiting the return of their celestial saviors.

Bretonians still live, and are the best representation I've got for these societies crawling through a Dark Age where the secrets of gunpowder and heavy industry are lost. These people had to form feudal societies just to survive, and had to fight harder than anyone else to match the forces of chaos.

This is how i plan on showcasing a campaign involving Prince Totally-Sigvald's-Cousin from an earlier comment: these guys would represent the remnants of the old nobility and the rest of the royal family in the big climactic battle with Slaanesh.

I've been messing around (in my head) with the idea of a bandit themed army. Since we got a world where's there's people and cities now, there's obviously going to be trade! and of course where there's trade...

The idea is that it might be based around a core of marauders, with maybe free people archers as ranged support (hey, if they're free, that can mean free to choose... not order). The army might not be all human, perhaps they've been joined by some grots who find raiding and stealing alongside humans is a nice life, or some mercenary ogres...

I'm still working on a story. They might be led by an outcast wizard of some kind. At any rate they're outcasts and renegades who make their living by thieving and raiding, but they aren't associated with order or chaos.

realism is a lie

Dude. How about a trigger warning next time?

One of my buddies is currently working on a Khorne-themed vampire army. Think Slaughterpriest on Zombie Dragon and Blood Knights on Juggernauts.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
