Hi,
Earlier today I began writting some lists, and I found Legion Support Squads with lascannons to be super expensive !
I wanted to make a 10 men squad with lascannons
How are your support squads ?
Do you play mainly 5 mens or 10 men support squad ?
5 lascannons shooting is only 3 hits, not a lot.

It's not. Remember, though, there are ways to increase the ballistic skill of the entire squad, and I think (as usual) things get cheaper per man with bigger units.
Lascannons are expensive, but thw preponderanxe of AV 14 - especially with flare shields and/or armoured ceramite - makes lascannnons one of the only reliable man-portable antitank.
A laser destroyer rapier battery is still probably a better idea, though.

Graviton rapiers are also good tank killers.
If you're taking lascannons you'd better throw an apothecary in there. Also, put your siege breaker in there too and give them all tank hunter, for the lulz. But honestly, a missile launcher support squad is a lot more bang for you buck.

Heavy weapon squads should stick with the cheaper weapon options, like autocannons or missile launchers. Lascannons really are just too expensive.

I feel a lascannon squad is just wasted points.
Played a tourney recently, in a 1.5k Army a guy brought an 8 man lascannon squad. I wiped it out in turn 1, before he got to fire.
He wasn't exactly happy.
Something like that is going to draw an unending rain of fire. Better to spend your points on things that won't draw as much attention.

missile launchers are decent for UM and IW due to the legion special rules/units.
Other than that aside from Volkite unless you really just want to model up heavy wpns you can pretty much skip them.
Heavy bolters might be a good option for DA--again purely because of the legion special rule.
At this point in 30k, to many other things are just way better in the heavy support slot and for the points than a legion heavy support squad.

Ok, thanks everyone.
And what is your prefered special squad ? Volkyte can't shoot an move, and plasma seems like the obvious choice in a Marines heavy setting.

Volkite Culverin don't need to move much with 45" range. S6 Heavy 4 is not too shabby when you pack in 10 dudes (or 9 + Augury). Nine dudes shooting Culverins average 24 hits, averaging 16 wounds on MEQ. That is about 5 unsaved wound plus another for Deflagrate. 6 dead Marines at 45" on a squad that costs 340pt is... well, you be the judge.
As some said, the Missile Launchers tend to be the most bang for you buck. 295pt for 9 Missile Launchers is not bad. Tuck in a Siege Breaker and they get Tank Hunter, which is a good perk and then unlocks Phosphex for Quad Launchers, too.

Personally I have a 10 man squad of Autocannons, and a smaller 5 man group of Volkite I feel the range and amount of shots they get 5 is enough to help clear out what the autocannons don't finish if need be, which they have done well at that. I am working on another 5 man of Missile launchers. But I like to load up on heavy weapons because I am Death Guard.

Makes sense, especially with The Reaping letting you take them as non-Comp Troops. Must be nice!
I bet you make every Rhino chassis sweat when they see all those autocannons.

I use Heavy Bolters... but I also play Dark Angels, so it's kind of a no-brainer.

I've been taking the Heavy Support squad less since I got a squad of bikes. Got a big game coming up this weekend though, running both. Should be fun.

I'd like to field a 10 model unit with Volkite Culverins. They just sound like so much fun with that RoW.

Tank hunter makes up for any percieved inadequacies when it comes to the fists, anyone who tells you rerolls to glance/pen isnt going to do some help is a fool and infantry can provide bulk firepower in a way that vehicles just cant and can almost always take a save of some sort. As for Iron Havocs all the previous sentence applies but they are even better, bs5 and -1 to the targets cover save is quite something and again the price is worth it. I dont actually know any vehicles with 10 lascannon sponsons or 10 autocannon sponsons etc but if there was one it would be quite expensive and it wouldnt get an armour save.
Never doubt the stopping power of infantry with high S long range firepower.

Volkite Culverin Heavy Support Squad, in a bunker with an ammo dump, has done well for me.
I would say Dark Angels with heavy bolters, Imperial Fists with tank-hunting weapons, and Iron Warrior Havocs are all solid choices, but they need some kind of fortification protection.
If left out in the open they provide a huge tempting target of opportunity that is also quite lethal so worth shooting at. I would expect all Thanatars and Medusas and Scorpius Whirlwinds and Quad Mortar Phosphex shells to target this unit first.
