Hi folks,

Is there any reason that one of the formations in IA11, which is listed as a Support choice for the Pale Courts battle hosts (specifically the 1-3 Lynx one in this case, but also includes the titans or vampire) could not be taken on its own, as a regular formation in a regular army that isn't a Battlehost with core/aux choices?

I think you're a little confused here. First off, a Detachment is anything that allows you to organise your units, whether it's force organisation chart like the standard Combined Arms Detachment, a formation that requires you to use specific units or a meta detachment that allowes you to group together a 2 or more formations in a specific way to gain extra bonuses.

Doom of Mymeara provides a large number of formations that can be used in the Craftworld Eldar codex, the roles of Core, Command, Auxillery and Support are there so that you can use the formations within the Carftworld Warhost meta detachment that is specific to Craftworld Eldar. The Pale Courts Battle Host is a single formation that can be used as a Core choice in a Craftworld Warhost rather than the name of an alternative meta detachment to the Craftworld Warhost, whilst the Skyhunter Squadron (the formation of 1-3 Lynx) is a Support choice for the Warhost (Doom of Mymeara also explains the requirements to field Support choices in a Warhost, a unique role Forgeworld created so that their big nasties could be taken in the Warhost).

With formations being detachments in their own right, and the BRB giving no limits on the number of detachments you can field in your army, then there is nothing stopping you taking the Skyhunters Squadron, or any other formation, alongside other formations, force organisation charts or meta detachments.
