Ok so i have the start collecting tau box set, which includes an etheral, 3 crisis suits, fire warrior team, and some drones etc. I also have an old hammer head, a few more crisis suits, a devilfish, a stealth suit team and 30 plastic fire warriors.

Im looking to build a fun but competitive list so far with these models. How would you organise these models to adhere to a 1250-2000 point list. What should i purchase next, many thanks x

A CAD is always a good place to start building an army but the game is shifting more and more towards formations as they provide pretty good benefits.

When I build lists I try and think of everything I might have to fight on the table top and make sure my list can cover all those aspects. It's very broad in today's meta but generally its the following

Anti MEQ
Anti Armor
Anti Horde
Anti Flyer

I'll give it ago with the models you listed, changing the hammer head into a skyray and using 7 crisis suits (one as a commander)

This list has some elements of a generic competitive buffmander + missile suit + markerlight set up, abusing the signature systems to buff the suits and get great markerlight hits. This should introduce you to a lot of different options with Tau. Other than that its pretty much an infantry horde with Str 5 shoots and an ethereal, some fusion suits for anti armor and a skyray for anti-air.
