Ahoy hoy

I'm building my army up to 3k and it's time to think about the big guns - the LoW choice. My idea is to bring in 2 knights from house Malinax to help out my traitorous Alpha Legion. This can be done in two ways, it seems. Pg. 9 of the Legion Astartes army list describes a LoW choice called a War Machine Detachment which can contain 1-2 super-heavies from the questoris knight list.

But the WAYY better option seems to be just making a Questoris knight allied detachment, consisting of an HQ choice and a Troops choice. This way, the knights gain Household rank - the HQ knight can be buffed up to super-beast-mode. This way, the knights are NOT LoW choices and the 25% points limit doesn't apply. And also, they do not give up victory points due to "the price of failure".

Question- Is this a super-gamey neck-beard route to take? The way I've worked it out- my knights will only take up 28% of the list- I'm not trying to overwhelm my list with knights. I just want the Styrix and Castigator because the models are awesome and they provide fire support and CC might. My 30k gaming group friends have got some LoW choices which provide some pretty rough anti-armour- so I know that one knight is not gonna be enough when I'm getting shot from across the field by D-blasts.

You intend to take two knights, I think the 'beardy' way to do it would be to take them as the LoW and then incorporate some form of secondary cheese via another ally choice, so sacrificing your ally choice to take the knights isn't being beardy. Also, neither of your knight choices are top tier and you've choosing them for looks, again, unbeardy and good.

No one should be too upset if you go for those Knights. If you wanted to be beardy, you would go Seneschal Lancer and a troop Magaera, Acastus, or Atropos.

Definitely go for the Questoris allies. The ranks really make them strong enough to hold up to the nastiness that is 30k. Knights aren't really OP in 30k at all, so even the "beardy" choices are just only good, not broken.

Thanks for the support

Love the Castigator, even though he's not the best. Wish he had one more gun mounted on him so he didn't have to charge the thing he shot the gatling cannon at.
