I keep hearing that in the Horus Heresy you either go big or go home. But sometimes even min squad can do enough damage. So the question arises - I have 10 space Mk 4 space marines and the possibility to turn them into a 10 man HS/TS squad (misile launchers/plasma guns) or make a 5 man HS squad and a 5 man TS squad with these weapons. So, what would be the best way - 2 min squads or 1 big squad. Can min squads in 30k give enough firepower to make taking them worthwile?

I think you would get more mileage out of the 10-man Missile Squad with a Siegebreaker than other options.

It could depend on your legion to be honest, nothing wrong with 5 and 5 especially if you need support in two different areas and would then be able to bulk both or either up to 10 at a later date.

With support squads, you're paying that premium for the minimum size unit. Five can get the job done, sometimes. But not if they're standing around to do that job, because they're still just five guys that won't take much to be shot to death. That's why more bodies is usually better. It does depends on several factors, though (legion choice, weapon choice, etc.).

A lot depends on what Legion and RoW you are using. The premium you pay for a small squad is very high, and even five meltaguns may not be able to do much against a vehicle, especially if it has Armored Ceramite. And shooting five meltaguns at a Legion Tactical Squad of 20 models isn't going to do much when they kill your five meltaguns next turn.

It's also absurdly easy to remove five models in 30K. With no ATSKNF, it's pretty easy to force them to go to ground or even break and run. Too many pie plates with AP 3 and Ignores Cover.

Well, building a TS army and not having any rules or ROW it's basicly building units, that are usefull regardless of thouse factors. So you people agree that bigger is always better. Gonna have to build ten missile guys first.

Or... wait like a few days maybe? No doubt people with a look at Inferno at the HH Weekender might have some insight into the Legion rules for 1K Sons?

I just don't like seing unassembled and unpainted models. Besides, any army needs anti-tank, so the Misile launches won't hurt. And the rules for TS and SW will most likely leak only next week, so the waiting continues.

Yeah, now that I understand the OP wants to field the Thousand Sons Legion, I'd say wait a week or two for Book VII and get the rules.

Nothing wrong with building 5 with the intention of doing 5 more later. I'm painting up 5 autocannon guys because I had 5 spare bodies; 10 S7 shots at 48" is still a good amount of firepower; could easily wreck a rhino per turn. Though, I guess I can use the reaping so there's a great deal more slots available for me to throw out min squads like that. Heavy support slots are indeed precious in 30k.

That is good and all... but it is literally this weekend you will see previews and rumors. You might want to wait, just in case your Legion gets something specific that you might want to capitalize on.
