I am going to a tournament and I am caught between 2 lists, my biggest fear as wolves is facing grab cents, or riptide wing.

1st list
Death pack
5 grey hunters
-drop pod, meltagun, wolf standard
5 thunderwolves
-5 storm shields
wolf lord
-fangsword of ice wolf, thunderwolf, runic armor

Company of great wolf
wolf lord
-runic armor, thunderwolf, wolf claw
Iron priest
-thunder wolf
5 wulfen
-2x th/ss, 2x great axes, grenade launcher, dual claws
5 thunderwolves
-5 storm shields
Librarius conclave
4 librarians
- all lvl 2 with bikes

2nd list
Company of Great wolf
wolf lord
- runic armor, thunderwolf, wolf claw, digital weapon
iron priest
-thunderwolf
5 wulfen
-2 th/ss, 2 great axes, dual claws, grenade launcher
6 thunderwolves
-6x storm shields
6 thunderwolves
-6x storm shields
Stormfang Gunship
- sky hammer, storm strike missiles

I have been out of the tournament scene for quite a while and not sure which would be better, I like the idea of being able to run and charge with the death pack, but that leaves me with little shooting abilities. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mmmmh I use to play lots of thunderwolves and wulfen too, but I highly recommend the wulfen murderpack and two units of thunderwolves with 4+ models in each squad, with an indipendent character in one the units.

You'll have 4 units that are high priority for the opponent, better wulfen and more chances to make your thunderwolves super fast.

Use 3 drop pods with troops with melta and combi melta (or plasmas if you prefer), or maybe just one and a second troop in a stormwolf.

Having little fire power is not an issue for SW; they're excellent in close combat and you shouldn't weaken their best units just to bring some firepower, avoid the gunship for example, the stormwolf is better even without carrying models.

So should I drop psykers in favor of troops

The conclave is quite powerful but SW can have their own psykers formation which is nice too, you can stick a run priest in every troop unit.

IMHO the murderpack and two units of thunderwolves are really nasty for the opponent and then you would just need some troops to make the list legal. Drop pods can harass the enemy quite well.

But that's just a suggestion, if you really like the conclave you can keep it, I just think that adding more bodies including another close combat dedicated unit is better in my opinion, that's why a single indipendent character with a thunderwolf mount is enough.

I much prefer the first list. I never really see flyer achieve all that much, plus the conclave let you really supercharge a unit into a deathstar (assuming that's what you wanted) plus hit and run, if they are white scars.

The list I ran was 2x 5 man units of thunder wolves, wulfen murderpack and 4 lib librarius conclave. Then wgbl and 2 iron priests all on t wolves

Ancient Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnought

If you want travel passes the Land Raider is a good bit of fun, especially when you load it with Frost Claw Wulfen and blast it up into their faces.

Back on topic target priority is a big thing to consider when you run Space Wolves - or any melee heavy army for that matter - your opponent knows what they want to stop, it's in your best interest to know what your opponent wants to stop and know how to change their mind.

Harassment 101
Dreadnoughts in Drop Pods - a lot of people say Dreadnoughts suck but the best thing in the world for a Thunderwolf Star is the removal of as many guns as possible from the equation. Heavy Flamers on infantry tends to catch people's attention pretty good, torching Marker Drones, Scatt Bikes, even Space Marines dislike having a Heavy Flamer turned on them. Deliver them in a Lucius pod and it'll eat more firepower that probably should have been directed at the TWC star, if they don't - unleash the Dread.
My personal favourite is Murderfang S8 on the charge, 9 attacks at I4 with ap2, master crafted and shred for good measure, oh and D3 extra attacks if Murderfang is outnumbered.
People allocate rescources to putting Murderfang down.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

I like the first list as well, the conclave is always amazing and I'm not a big fan of the SW flyer. I also much prefer the WGBL with Krakenbone sword to the Wolf lord with a claw. The WGBL, despite having one less wound, is an absolute monster in challenges with that relic, and very cheap. The death pack is great, especially when you get the bonus move distance from the Wulfen - I get turn 1 charges all the time that way.

That being said, I agree 100% with Dakka Wolf that the list needs something to take the heat off of your thunderwolves and Wulfen - I use Murderfang in almost every game and at the very worst he is a huge bullet sponge for a turn (especially with the forge world drop pod that gets shrouded).

Even with TWC and Wulfen closing in, people seem to freak out about a dreadnought dropping right next to their favorite unit and shoot literally everything at it until they kill it. If he DOES make it to combat, he's been an absolute beast for me, especially against TDA and the like that can only hurt him with I1 hammers and powerfists.

At his worst, Murderfang is a great distraction carnifex for 185 points, and at his best an infantry mulching beast. If you downgraded the Wolf lord to a WGBL and dropped a few storm shields here and there (I've never found that 5 as opposed to 2-3 made a big difference in large TWC squads, especially with IC's attached) to find 185 points for Murderfang in a Lucius Pattern drop pod.

The list I had the toughest time dealing with was the Magnus summoning list and the spamming of str d such as the beam. The only counter to that I can think of is culexus but then I am limited to only 2 other detachments and I have to drop either conclave or murderpack.

Then with murderfang I might shy away with ynari especially with soulburst.
