Hi,

I want to start my journey with AoS, but I don't know which direction I should take. I've played Warhammer, Warhammer 40k and Guild Ball casually and Warmachine competetively. I would like my AoS army to be both competitive and fun to play. After checking my local community and what armies does players have out here I decided to go for the Stormcast.

I made some research on the game and the army, read rules and warscrolls for Stormcast but right now I only have one intro game on my account :( I want to start collecting the army and start looking what works for me and what doesn't work.

Its always was a good idea to buy battleforce or battalion for GW games, which are named Start Collecting right now, but this Stormcast box seems really underwhelming. Im getting 2 retributors that I can't even field, because the unit cosists of 5 models. I'm also not getting this maces that are good to take on retributors from what I've heard. Prosecutors, are also rather fielded with javelins, and I don't think I'm getting parts to build them Javelins.

Here's where I would like to know if I'm right that it's not worth buying this box, and what would you suggest me to buy first to start collecting towards 1500 army list at first

Gathering the Informations.

Retributors can actually be as small as 3 models. The other Paladin types(Protectors and Decimators) are 5 models minimum.

The Prosecutors and Liberators in the SC: Stormcast box give you the full kits from what I can tell(the Great Hammer and axes aren't part of the big AoS starter set for those two units), the Retributors are just the little $15 "easy to build" set.

If you want a good value and don't mind having stuff set up a specific way? Go for the main AoS starter set(Bloodbound v. Stormcast). It gives you a huge chunk of a Stormcast army right off the bat.

You could also keep an eye out for the Christmas box they did for Stormcast.

The starter box does give a lot of stuff, but not in a competitive min/max army. If the goal is to be competitive, you might want to re-evaluate that and do up a list first and see how much you'd be using from the starter box.

The SC Box and the AoS starter set gives you a good set of stuff you can use. 1 celestant on dracoth, celestant on foot for the +1 to hit command, relictor for priest buffs, 3 5-man liberator teams, 2 3-man prosecutors, 1 5-man retributors. To that, you can add whatever heroes you like for buffs, then whatever units you need to fulfill whichever warscroll battalion you want to use. You probably also want the new battletome plus the general's handbook for matched play.

Edit*

I think maces are wasted on retributors if you can give them +1 to hit. They can potentially generate more mortal wounds that way. I think maces are better on the other paladin builds in order to round out their otherwise rather specialized combat role. The SC box gives you 2 retributors while the starter set gives you 3 making the two boxes complementary of sorts.

The SC box has the full prosecutor kit with javelins. The Starter only has paired hammers. Javs offer somewhat better ranged support, while paired hammers are for long charges on important targets behind the enemy front lines.

Liberators on SC box are full kit, Starter has hammer and shield only. It is generally considered hammer and shield liberators are the better loadout. You can use the extra greatweapon bits on the SC prosecutor kit to fill up the ones in the starter box that dont have those.

Always max out maces, the value of guaranteed damage far outweighs the higher theoretical maximum of hammers. You'll thank me the first time you play Sylvaneth. If you can find either of the large battleforce type kits, those are the absolute best, it's rare to find them at a decent price though.

Yeah, Sylvaneth stomps, Neferata and Mourngul de-buffs etc will make you regret not having Starsoul Maces pretty quickly.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)
