I am thinking about getting a Cigar box battle mat. Has anyone played on or seen the plush mats? How are they? Do they look good or is it just a gimmick?

Having been using neoprene for a while, I'd skip anything which wasn't. If it's just tarted up felt, I'd take neoprene anyday (I own plenty of both). I've looked at their mats before and it's something which turned me off immediately.
