I'm thinking of putting my power armoured CSM Lord on a terminator base in order to set him apart from the rest of the chaff.

I mostly play pugs with people I don't know that well at my FLGS and I never play tournaments. Am I likely to run into much resistance if I go ahead with this?

If they have any "bubble" or "aura" effect it's shenanigans.
Otherwise the Pro's and Con's work out to more or less even.

Yeah with the current state of 28mm and 32mm bases out there. I cannot fathom anyone having a valid argument against it

The rulebook doesn't define what kinds of bases unit types should be put on.

All we have as a GUIDELINE is the kind of bases GW provide in the kits.

Since you're only playing casual games, I think the Lord on a larger base would be fine. But I would suggest extending the tape to the edge of what would be the 32mm base size when measuring ranges of anything when facing new opponents, to be fair.

And if you do change your mind and go to tournaments, you should put the lord on a 32mm base to reduce complaints.

He is going to be an EC lord so I might run into some trouble once fear checks start happening, but other than that, I don't think I have access to too many auras.

If they complain just decrease the range by 4mm.

I put my converted Cadre fireblades on bigger bases so they easily stick out for the opponent.

I've never had a complaint about this. TBH, unless you've an entire ork army on space marine basses (which would make them take up so much more space) or something equally large scale, it should be fine.

That being said, the bigger the base, the more annoying it'll be if it's used too much. Put a tyranid gaunt' on a bike base, and you'll get nasty looks.
