Hello all, this time here with a tau list. Wanted to try something a bit more competitive and a list online inspired me to finally make something I've been wanting to try for awhile.

Below are two lists, please let me know if you think they should be changed in any way, and which is stronger.

Couple things, though take it with a grain of salt as I haven't run a mass Tau Monstrous creatures list, so this is just my general thoughts.

First, I think, though the commander in the drone squad is solid, you're going to want more markerlight sources. If you're going for competitive, your opponent will know to target down the drones first, which may inadvertently down your commander too. Maybe consider running the drone net formation? Markerlights are just such good force multipliers, and are what you need to launch those sweet D strength missiles from the stormsurge.

Second, in list two, are you running just three suits without weapons?

And yes, naked suits to save points. In either list they're just meant to deep strike at the end and try and take objectives with Obj Sec.

Any thoughts on whether the y'vahra is worth losing all of those bonuses from the first list?

Both of these lists are gross (in a good way) but Im thinking list one would be the go-to competitive list because of the buffs all 5 riptides gain- which is ridiculous.

With regards to markers, ive found i cant run the HBC without them and even the iontides become a little impotent with BS3.

The problem with the marker commander is you only have 6 markers there army wide and they all have to go on the same target, so what if your opponent brings spam? not only this, they only have to kill 2 drones to force a leadership check and if you fail you are gone because thats 3d6 and chances are your sat at the back of the board.
This makes the drone net a must take- with jink+interceptor and supporting fire they are amazing- bringing your overwatch up to BS3 with a couple of lucky 6's from supporting fire markers is no joke. And for only 225pts its about the same as a riptide with stims right?
Also try and get a velocity tracker in there, could help against the growing number of fmc, although again drop every marker you have on one and you will role some 6's, and even if that only means your hitting on 5's you could still do some damage with a nova charged HBC... maybe force a grounding check etc.

In kid 1 the stormsurge has a velocity tracker, so he'd hopefully be taking down the flyrants.

As far as a drone net goes, it'd be very helpful but it's difficult to decide what to cut. Obviously the current drones, could denote the commander to a fire blade and essentially give them slay the warlord though. Any suggestions?

I agree that switching out for a Drone Net is the way to go. Multiple marker sources is great if you can get it. Drop the Riptide stims to get the points. Otherwise, seems like a solid, tournament-quality list.

You definitely need a munistrum container with the riptide wing. Reroll 1's when within 6 inches makes it mental. Stops all those overheats!

I'm thinking with that it'll be fine with the current number of drones. The drone net formation is crazy good don't get me wrong, but the stimulant injectors are way too valuable on riptides for me and at the end of the day they're the firepower in the list.

Stims aren't as valuable as extra offense, in my opinion, but they're a valid option. I'd at least take them off the IA tides, though, since they can more easily afford to go for 3++ on the nova.

Played the game today with an edited list with the munitorium armoires container and geez, that thing is incredible.

Drones were gone by turn 3 due to 2 wyverns and a whirlwind, but they really that useful to begin with. Stormsurge got locked in combat against a single tactical marine for a few turns but the Riptides did serious damage. Very happy with the list, just would never take it in anything other than a tournament.

I like the 2nd list more because of the Y´vara. Maybe you could drop the CAD riptide to get the drones and maybe make 1 drone unit bigger with the spare points for the commander. try to get the velocity tracker back on the SS as well.

Yeah, got the VT back on the stormsurge with the final list. I really wanted to encorporate the Y'vahra into the list as I love the model and its rules, but I think having the +1 BS on the HBC Riptides is way too useful.
