[ Original post ]

Looking forward to what sounds like a continuation of the Abbaddon storyline in summer and also what GW will offer in the new 40k rulebook for narrative play in 8th edition. For AoS there will be a community-organised, world-wide event - good to see they support projects like this.

Narrative Play: Tell Your Own Stories

The head of the Warhammer Books and Boxed Games team, Pete Foley, talks to us today about narrative play.

All across the Mortal Realms, deeds of heroism and villainy are afoot. Sigmar is on the offensive and the Stormcast Eternals have claimed a few beachheads in their quest to wrest control of the lands from Chaos.

Meanwhile, hope is reborn in the far future, as Roboute Guilliman is banding the fragile Imperium together to face the greatest test of its resolve against the corrupting powers of Chaos.

The boards are set, the pieces are moving, and it is against these backdrops that hobbyists everywhere create their own tales by building their forces, painting them and fighting mighty battles.

Creating scenarios where your army has to prevent the enemy from completing a dark ritual that will tear the very substance of reality apart. Playing an epic campaign, where each participant is trying to carve out their own region of the map to call their own. Naming and writing the back-story for all the characters and units in your army. All of these are examples of narrative play, and they can be one of the most involved and fulfilling ways to engage with the Warhammer hobby.

The grim darkness of the 41st Millennium and the Mortal Realms of the Age of Sigmar are both perfect places to explore this style of gaming. Both of these settings are vast and fantastical, perfect for creating your own corner to set your games in, or crafting the starting point for your army’s adventures.

The greater narrative aspects of both universes allow you to imagine where your army might fit, or how your next game might impact the future. What was your army doing during the Realmgate Wars? Now that the galaxy is facing its greatest threats, will your army side with the Imperium and Roboute Guilliman, or will you side with Abaddon and his crusade to tip the galaxy into Chaos?

This summer, some of our most dedicated Age of Sigmar narrative play enthusiasts are organising a global event. A single day where every hobbyists who enjoys creating new stories in Age of Sigmar can come together and shape the future of the Mortal Realms. It’s called Coalescence, and you can find out all about it here:

http://www.tga.community/forums/topic/7141-coalescence-global-1-day-narrative-event/

If you want to be a part of this epic event, then get down to your local Games Workshop or Warhammer store. If you aren’t near one, then talk to your local gaming store and see if they are taking part. Alternatively, get on to the NEO (Narrative Event Organiser) team and ask them for a pack for your gaming group. No matter what, you should be able to take part in this unique, global event.

As for Warhammer 40,000, there are some great narrative play opportunities coming this summer, but you will have to stay posted here on the Warhammer Community site and Facebook for more details on that. Needless to say, it’s going to involve war! I think I’m going to cast my lot with the Despoiler and finally watch the galaxy burn!

So, this summer, get your story telling cap on. Marshal your forces and prepare to fight for your own cause. Whether it’s reclaiming the Mortal Realms for the forces of Order or plunging the grim dark galaxy of the far future into violent turmoil, it’s your story to tell, and whatever happens, it’ll be loads of fun.

Got some thoughts on Narrative Play, or anything else for that matter? Then you can reply to the Facebook post about this article, or find me on twitter @geekjockpete

Should we make a community donation effort to make sure Bottle is apart of this?

Personally, I think we should all print off a copy of Bottle's Hinterlands and mail them to Nottingham as well as emailing the the PDFs to customer service and posting links to every GW-related Facebook page just to make sure they've seen it.

Haha, it's very strange to come into a thread and see people talking about you. Coalescence is such a cool idea. I talk with quite a few of the people behind it on Twitter and they are some of the most enthusiastic and talented hobbyists you'll ever meet!

As for Hinterlands, it plays no part in this, but it gets a cheeky mention in the SCGT narrative hijack and will hopefully be present in some minor form at the Realms at War narrative event later this year.

Hey, when you make something awesome and popular, people talk.

Good to hear they mentioned it, that would've boggled my mind that GW never caught wind of it despite getting discussed everywhere from forums to reddit.

Here's hoping your work gets more notice! !

Rashbold
GW Hannover has this note for June 18th:

Muster Up!
Prepare your forces! For each completed unit, receive one point for your side in this campaign as you amass your forces ready for battle!

This week: Double points for all Space Marine units and Start Collecting Boxes completed!

July 30 - Aug 05: Fate of Konor - The Battle Begins

Damo1701
The worshippers of Chaos seek to smash a path through the Imperial battle line to Macragge, home world of the Ultramarines. Should they succeed, the greatest Imperial stronghold in the sector will be gravely threatened, and Guilliman’s forces will be cut off and surrounded.

To achieve this end, the forces of Chaos must conquer the powerful, well-located Konor System.  The Konor System embodies the glorious dream of Ultramar.  Crucially, it also guards one of the few stable warp transit routes to the Macragge System. If the Chaos advance is not halted, Konor will soon fall, and a path to the heartland of Ultramar will be laid bare.

WHAT IS THE FATE OF KONOR CAMPAIGN?

Through July, August and September all of our customers will fight to decide the fate of the Konor System to see if it falls into the hands of Chaos. All armies can get involved and the final results will be written into Warhammer 40,000 lore! Customers will fight for six planets over six weeks. Each planet will have a specific story, mission, weekly special rules and gaming theme, and will be affected by the results of the previous planet(s).  Customers will be able to post results by logging ‘games won’ or newly painted datasheets in your store.

There are 3 stages to the campaign:
Promotion – between 17th June and the 1st July.
Army Muster – between 1st July and 27th July
Campaign – between 27th July and the 10th September

PROMOTION, MUSTER AND CAMPAIGN

From the launch of all of our new Warhammer 40,000 products we will be promoting the fact that we are running a Global Online Campaign from the 27th July.

Promotion: Talk to all of your customers about the upcoming campaign both in your store and on your store Facebook page – get them excited.

Muster: This is the time for customers to choose which faction they will fight with and to build and paint their forces ready for the battles ahead.  Additionally each week of the campaign will have a ‘theme’ with a selection of products that will count for double points during the campaign (see below) and the muster gives them an opportunity to buy, build and paint these units in advance!

Campaign: Customers can post results in your store by playing and winning games or by painting a new datasheet's worth of troops. They can post a win for Chaos, a win for the Imperium or in the case of all other forces remove a win from either the Imperium or Chaos!

WEEKLY THEMES

On each of the six planets some units feature more prominently than others.

Customers will get double points in the campaign for using a force that contains one or more of these units OR paints a datasheet that contains this unit type.  We are going to let our customers know these themes right from the beginning:

Week 1: Space Marines and Start Collecting! sets

Week 2: Elites

Week 3: Tanks

Week 4: Psykers

Week 5: Fast Attack/Flyers

Week 6: Lords of War/Scenery

A STUNNING CAMPAIGN WEBSITE
We learnt a lot from our Season of War Online Campaign… The interactive website for The Fate of Konor is going to be amazing and will let your customers know the impact of their battles in your store and how the campaign is going globally.  It will include downloads, countdowns, videos and much, much more…

CAMPAIGN PACK

We have put together a cool campaign pack to help you have a fantastic time in your store over the period of the campaign. It will include:

Astaramis Mission/Stratagem envelope: Astaramis is the first planet to be fought over in the campaign and has a Unique Mission and weekly special rules – open this envelope on the 27th July and use it for your gaming activities in week one.

Please note: each week's new Missions and weekly special rules will be emailed to you and will also be available on the campaign website.

Army Roster Sheets: This is a pad of 50 roster sheets. Give them to customers so they can write out an army list and record their Command Points etc. – feel free to
photocopy them if you need more!

Window Poster: Put this up in your store window to show customers that you are running Fate of Konor activities.

Campaign Map and Map Stickers: This massive campaign map will show off all the planets in the Konor System and will look great in your store. Use the campaign map stickers to show which force controls each planet at the end of each week of the campaign.

Aren't they kind of... stacking things unfairly in the Imperium's favour, there?

"Bonus points if you bring Space Marines!"

Given that, like, 70% of the player-base will be doing that anyway, it seems like an odd choice.

Very interesting. I like the map.

Hard to say if the campaign will be fun from just the images thus far.

Spoiler:

The Fate of Konor is a massive worldwide campaign that will decide the fate of one of the primary planets in the 500 Worlds of Ultramar. You’ll be able to battle at home or in stores across a variety of planets and war zones in the system, and your games will decide the eventual fate of one of the strategically important worlds in the segmentum and the Imperium.

The campaign kicks off in July – so you’ll have plenty of time to get your head round the new Warhammer 40,000 rules and paint up some new units for your army.

The Fate of Konor website and with it the briefing for week 1 went online

https://warhammer40000.com/fate-konor-galaxy-flames/

The campign starts with planet Astaramis

Astaramis is a well-ordered and heavily defended hive world, the largest center of population in the Konor System and a potent symbol of Imperial dominance.

Having gathered significant momentum with their early victories on the outskirts of the Konor System, the armies of Chaos spread out across the region like poison seeping into the blood stream of the Imperium.

A vast segment of the Chaos armada descends upon Astaramis, the most populous planet in the system. With its teeming cities arranged in vast concentric rings, the well governed and prosperous hive world exemplifies the grand dream that is Ultramar. However, even Astaramis’ formidable orbital defence platforms and veteran garrison are not enough to hold back the oncoming tide. The Chaos armada launches waves of magmatic torpedoes, and macro-cannons obliterate planetary fortifications and engulf entire regiments of defenders in searing firestorms. Heretic Astartes and their allies slam to earth in blistering drop pod assaults, blasting apart anything that moves even as they march implacably onwards towards targets of strategic value.

During the Great Crusade, the Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman made landfall upon Astaramis. In the centuries since, the population has come to regard him as a saint, raising vast statues and temples in his name. Hearts emboldened by the revelation that Guilliman has risen from his millennia-long slumber to defend Humanity once more, they fight on bravely in the face of an unceasing onslaught. From the shrines of Saviour’s Landing to the vast and imposing Quintus Gate, the streets echo with the unceasing chatter of las-fire and the dull thud of bolters and high-explosive rounds.

Yet for all the tenaciousness and devotion shown by the people of Astaramis, they cannot stand alone. With every passing hour, the invaders push further inward, taking hab-block after hab-block. Xenos forces have also been spotted planetside, exploiting the confusion of battle in order to kill, loot or pursue their unknowable ends. Imperial forces have already been forced back as far as the hive’s innermost spires, and the outer districts are little more than a rubble-strewn wasteland. If reinforcements do not arrive soon then Chaos will have gutted the Imperium’s greatest source of manpower in the Konor System, and destroyed a potent symbol of Imperial faith.

So lets run a champaign based around the 2 starter box armies that will decide the future story line. But we cant have chaos win so lets run the whole thing when marines are the only army with a codex and loads of new units and special rules. Wait thats still not enoigh oh well lets give space marine players double points the first week just for playing space marines. Yeah sounds like a fair set up
