Do ICs have to maintain a unit or can they split up and join other units? The question is regarding the Cyclopia Cabal formation from Traitor Legions. Are my sorcerers free to join other units and can they join units from other formations (for example the Chaos Warband Formation)?

Does anything in the Cyclopia Cabal say they lose the IC rule?
Ethereal Council (Tau) says that they lose, so you cannot join other units, for example.

For that formation there is nothign stopping you from having those socerers in other squads. The only thing that requires them to be close is their shroud of deceit rule. Which is 12" from the person nominated to do the ritual

I am not familiar with the Cabal, but apparently GW thinks that the Techmarine (an IC) who purchases Servitors in to his unit cannot leave that unit or join another unit until the Servitors are removed as casualties.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

Those servitors are a part of his unit that circumstance, he didn't join a unit they are his unit, I would imagine that is the reason why. The IC rule allows him to join a unit, but he is still his own unit, which in that case includes servitors. Probably because the servitors don't have the IC rule themselves as a model. He can't leave his own unit, never could, and they can't join with him.

I have not read that tech marine documentation, but I would have to check the datasheets.

He is joined by the Servitors in his unit.

But the actual rule states, "An Independent Character can leave a unit during the Movement phase by moving out of unit coherency with it." Nothing is stated here about leaving "a joined unit", just leaving "a unit". So, technically speaking the TM can leave his own original unit.

But the FAQ interactions with ICs are really messed up to begin with before making any consideration here.

Where does it state this?

Found it.

Spoiler:
Q: Do Servitors for Techmarines and Chaplain Grimaldus form their own squad that the character is free to join and leave, or are they attached permanently to the character? In either case, are they allowed to join other units with the character?
A: If a Techmarine or Chaplain Grimaldus is accompanied by any Servitors or Cenobyte Servitors, they count as a unit which the character cannot leave, and they cannot join other units (though Independent Characters can join them). If the Servitors are killed, the character can join other units as normal.
