Friends are playing a new Escalation League, and I chose necrons. We have to start with our Start Collecting! boxes, and making a decent look alike if one doesn't exist. Going to be fighting Sisters, DE, Eldar, Genestealer Cult, and KDK so far (SW, and Daemon players I haven't seen yet).
Rules for units is that as long as we keep whatever upgrades, we can move them around between formations between months, so I can move my warriors from the starting box formation to be the Decurion warriors.
Just want to make sure I have my priorities straight with what I take each month:
2nd month I'll have to do a CAD with the Canoptek Harvest (gloom prism on spyder), and upgrade my overlord to have a warscythe and the Invul save (he died in my first game to a psyhic shriek from Grayfax...)
3rd month Ill have my Decurion, with Judicator Battalion and the Harvest
After that, I dunno. Maybe get Annihilation Nexus or w/e that formation is. A C'Tan cause they seem neat. Last month we're allowed a super heavy, and was debating an Obelisk.
Allies have to stick to the Allied detachment, and nothing lower than Allies of Convenience. Also the Allied Detachment can have a LoW.
For the first month the overlord didn't have anything, since the start collecting box and a ghost ark all came out to 500 points even, which was the limit for the first month. Each month adds 500 points. Sorry for not having that in the original post >_<
So this is what I'm thinking for next month, month after will swap to the decurion and add in the judicator formation at 1500, keeping all this warhead. The praetorians then will have the pistol and void blade.

Run the Praetorians with the Rod of Covenant. AP2 will stop all saves bare X++. Also it can be used in melee for AP2 as well. Better the the blades and pistol tbh.
Unfortunately I can't change the overlord into a destroyer lord (as the rules for the league prohibit subtracting things), even though the destroyers look juicy... might have to get a CAD alongside the decurion for them.
So rod of covenants and destroyers then. Should I try getting them on the board asap?
For other league details: 500 points each month for six months, ending at 3000
So for clarification sake,
Escalation league:
- 500 points at a time.
- start with the Start Collecting box.
- anything added must be kept the entire league.
- however, things that are added can shuffle around in your list to make different formation configurations (ie. Scarabs that were in the Retribution Phalanx can join a Canoptek Harvest).
If the above is all correct, I would highly discourage getting any new vehicles. Maybe additional ones of the two you've already got wouldn't be too bad, but none of the other 'Cron vehicles are worth adding.
Would agree that Rods tend to be better on Praetorians.
Deathmarks are good in the right situations, but typically you wouldn't need them until higher point levels. Your points would be better used on more Tomb Blades (always a good investment).
Your optimal goal would be a Decurion with C.Harvest and J.Battalion. A Destroyer Lord would be great but means having to go CAD later (very difficult to fit a harvest, battalion, AND a Destroyer Cult into a Decurion list). Focus on getting those ones optimized, first.

3000 point final?
Nevermind, you can totally fit a Destroyer Cult in with a Judicator Battalion and Canoptek Harvest in a Decurion at that level.
What do you currently have on hand? (Either that you already own or have access to to use)

You're making your second round list now, right?
What EXACTLY did you take for your first 500 points? (So we know what must be kept in for the next round)
Additionally, I have another Overlord coming in the mail (3rd party; I so wanted the model), I have third party substitutes for 6 Deathmarks, the above 500, a third party model I could use for a Nightbringer, as well as 3 tomb blades with the guass, and new boxes of: Triarch Praetorians x2, Wraiths x1, Spyder x1, and Immortals x1

Oh yes Forge World is allowed. A few of them already placed an order together for free shipping. Gauss Exterminator the go to for Sentry Pylons? Although this means I would need a CAD at some point
Unfortunately the Gauss is skyfire, inteceptor, so its shooting ground targets on 6's.....
The focused death ray is the one you want, does quite a lot of damage when it gets into range.
I would focus on building your Decurion first, and get tomb blades. I have 12 and still thinking about getting some more so I can really max out squads. Get the key formations built up (its also good to have these models as they are strong in any list you build). Once you have your Decurion, d-cult, wraiths and praet formations then you can look at adding in some pylons if you feel they would help in your meta.
Gauss on the Pylon can only hit flyers due to Skyfire and units deepstriking via Interceptor. Either a Death Ray or Heat Cannon would be better. If you get one give it Deepstrike so tou can plan its deployment properly and can throw your opponent off.
Can just do a bare-bones CAD (overlord/lord, 2 5 Immortals, 1/2 Sentry Pylons) and add that to a Decurion when your 1500-2000+ into the league.
I would do what Klowny said and bring them late game. Better to build your main army and then add on extra models that you think will help during the more point heavy games.

I don't think I would add anything to your list that can't be easily taken in your Decurion (eg. a single Lord or the Heavy Destroyers in Odrankt's above list examples). While under normal circumstances those lists would be good, because you're playing in a format that requires to to take whatever you've previously taken in every iteration of your list before, if you include things that don't easily fit into a Decurion you'll be stuck having to take a CAD every time. Later on that's no big deal, but in the early stages that's going to be extremely restrictive with your building flexibility.
So you've got this to work with (asterisk denotes required):
1x Overlord*
1x Stalker*
10x Warriors*
1x Ghost Ark*
3x Scarabs*
3x Wraiths
1x Spyder
5x Immortals
5x Deathmarks
10x Praetorians
3x Tomb Blades
(I'm not including the C'tan. They're not worth it, especially in this format)
- You've got a Stalker, so obviously that means you can go with either the Retribution or Judicator Battalion (note: do not turn one of your boxes into Lychguard. You'll need both to make the J.Battalion's two units of Praetorians).
- You've got Scarabs in there already, so Retribution or Harvest are doable.
- You're required to take both a Stalker and Scarabs, but unfortunately, at 1000 points, you'll be unable to take a Decurion that includes both a J.Battalion and a Harvest, so you're stuck with CAD for the moment (you can start taking Decurion from 1500).
- Warriors and Overlord go with anything, so you're safe there... however, you gave your Warriors a Ghost Ark, so you're stuck with one of those in every list from now on.
- You'll need another unit of Warriors to make a Decurion, so that will give you some more Scarabs you can add to the Harvest or Retribution Phalanx later.
The Overlord is the delivery system for the Immortals. This unit jumps onto Objectives and blasts whatever is holding it off (would have loved to have given him a Warscythe and Phase Shifter, but to do so would require dropping the Tomb Blades, and they're way too valuable. Could have dropped the Praetorians but then you'd be stuck with 100 points left and nothing you have available that could have filled the gap without hindering you in later games... maaaaaybe Deathmarks if you don't mind being stuck with them for the rest of the league. This list allows you to perfectly set yourself up for a Decurion with Harvest and Battalion next round).
Speaking of future rounds, I would recommend picking up more of the following boxes:
1x Warriors
1-3x Tomb Blades
1x Wraiths (maybe)
Later on, perhaps start looking at Destroyers.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Yeah, on second thought, Deathmarks instead of Praetorians this round, so you can get the Warscythe and Phase Shifter on the Overlord:
