Hi people ! I just wanted to know if the Legion Whirlwind Scorpius was worth taking as an heavy support choice or if something else was better for that slot. I try to avoid FW models and to convert GW models to keep it cheap. What are your thougths on the subject ?

Yes, it's good. Pairs well if your infantry squads have a vox, so you can keep it hidden. Also, you will also be able to damage some vehicles a bit with it, since it's barrage and hits their side armor.

Sure, you can't buy it the Battle of Keylek upgrade to ignore cover like in 40k, but it's still very potent simply because of its barrage rule.

Yes, it's worth it. There are very few other vehicles in 30K for 115 points that can drop 2-4 S8 AP3 Barrage Blasts. As noted, that S8 is hitting vehicles on their side armor, meaning the Scorpius makes for fair anti-tank. It also has one of the highest front armor values of artillery vehicles.

You might see people talk about a Basilisk or Medusa- but both of those are ordinance, 5" Pie Plates of DOOOOOM! Those are good field artillery pieces and are very expensive. If you want more than one (and you usually do), you'll end up making your army around a field artillery unit, and really, only a few Legions make that work well. The Scorpius can easily be slotted into any Legion and provide great artillery support.

The other unit you might want to look at are Rapier Weapons Batteries- perhaps the most undercosted, most effective aka "Borkin" unit in 30K.

It's strong, but can be one-shotted like any vehicle. I feel it's a lot more balanced than the rapiers with phosphex, which should never have existed.

The scorpius is actually a great way to deal with quad mortar batteries in a barrage fight. The rapiers can't hurt it with their S5 shots while the scorpius can erase them with its high strength and low AP. Just keep it out of sight.

Shatter rounds need line of sight, so it's still valid but terrain dependent.

The point is that you can't always hide it and Quads do have a very easy way to kill a Scorpius. I know which unit I would rather have. I think the Scorpius, while cheap, needs to be able to be taken in squadrons or something. Just one is a waste of a heavy slot, imo.

Naw, the scorpius solo is just fine. being able to pump out a metric ton of Power armour mulching, while still being long ranged enough to harm other artillery, and armoured enough to not be a complete pushover if you cant find cover (AV 13 front is nice)

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

It is an excellent choice in low points cost games.

I personally believe it and the sicarans should be in 1-2 model squadron choices, so as not to be as prolific as the predator types but more so than the land raider family of tanks.
