Hey All,
I wanted to share an article I just got in the Syfy Wire about designing you own miniature. The article talks about it being for D&d but these ideas can apply to anything you want to print at that scale.

This is really cool, I just backed a 3D printer on Kickstarter and I was curious how I would make my own miniatures. Really cool article. Thanks for posting

Its well put together and very helpful. I started off with Blender and Meshmixer and they are great learning tools.
One thing thats worth throwing out there is that compared to a dedicated sculpting tool like Zbrush, this entire process is like pulling teeth. Anyone interesting in sculpting highly detailed miniatures or anything in 3D should at least try out the 45 day free trial of Zbrush. Obviously the hefty price tag is not worth it, but using Zbrush will make some of the things you have to do in a program like blender make a little more sense.

You can start with Sculptris. It's free. From there, you can go to ZBrush Core and eventually upgrade to the main Zbrush if you like sculpting. I would recommend starting with a program that is more hard surface focused like Blender or 3D Coat and ease yourself into sculpting later.

Or you find a college near you with a 3d imaging program and intentionally fail each semester.. Not pretty but hey when you save 9,000 a year who cares about gpa. #solidworks whore

I really like FreeCAD, feels a lot like Solidworks (which I had briefly through Uni)
