As a follow-up to my question about wargame Genres, I wanted to expand some of the discussion around historicals. What is some of your favorite periods/theatres to play?
For example:
I like Ancients, but I prefer to play:
-Greek Hoplites
-Diadochi/Successors
- Roman Gladiators
For WWII I like:
-Italians in North Africa
For Interwar I like:
- 1920's Gangsters
Those are my preferred historical periods. How about you?

I don't have a "preferred" historical period, as I play anything if it gets put on the table. That said, I have miniatures for various projects: Ancients - 15mm Romans for ADLG, 15mm Romans and Ancient British for DBA Dark Ages - 28mm Vikings, Anglo-Danes, Normans, Welsh, Irish, usually for SAGA, 15mm Vikings and Anglo Saxons for DBA Medieval - 15mm Free Company for ADLG Renaissance - I suppose this is where 28mm Samurai for Sengoku would go 17th Century - 28mm Pirates 18th Century - 28mm French and Indian War, cards for Blucher 19th Century - 28mm Old West 20th Century - 15mm WWII British and Germans

To play? I prefer skirmish level games, or platoon (20-30) sized kind of games, even if that terminology doesn't make sense during, say the Crusades etc.
I think one of the smarter gaming things you can do is to invest in small skirmish games where you can use a dozen different rule sets to play the same genre (meaning you have choices). Smart ones include:
1) Gladiators. You can never go wrong with gladiators. Lots of character, lots of feel, and a surprisingly deep back story if you bother to research them (i.e. nothing like you'd expect).
2) Old West. One of the few historical periods where (albeit slightly exaggerated) you can justify actual wargame style engagements. Lots of story, character, and a very unique visual setting. Again, there are a dozen or more rules sets...so you can buy the figures/town and use whatever you like.
3) Ancients/Dark Ages/Vikings. Again, a great area for small warbands and skirmishes. Lots of useful terrain available, and tons of minis.

Most of mine are "periods I'd like to game in", but anyway ...
1st century AD Romans - vs Gauls, Germans, Britons, Judeans, other Romans ...
Napoleonic naval battles (definitely not a fan of land engagements, though).
WW1 and WW2 air combat. I've dabbled with Flames of War for ground combat, but I'm simply not keen on the look of the things, really. Not unless I can do an armoured force consisting entirely of British home-grown tanks - Cromwells and Comets, that sort of thing.
I really fancy a 100 Years' War army with plenty of cavalry, but the idea of actually painting them all puts me off.
And I've just chipped in for Black Scorpion Miniatures' upcoming Tombstone old west game.
Most of my interest comes from fiction, though - I quite fancy a Roman army due to watching Rome and reading Lindsey Davis' and Steven Saylor's novels.

I like too many...
Have:
WW2 Naval (1:3000 for Atlantic and 1:6000 for Pacific)
WW2 Air (1:600 Battle of Britain and late war west front Europe)
WW2 West Front in 28mm
Wild West in 28mm
Gladiators in 28mm
Anglo-Zulu wars in 28mm (and am expanding colonials to play Congo and similar games with other factions)
28mm Dark Ages
15mm DBA type armies for Rome/Carthage/Greek/Late Roman/Arthurian/Viking
Some 28mm moderns (but typically used in Zombie or gang warfare type games)
28mm Pirates (to include a couple ships painted and a couple more needing paint)
Used to have an extensive set of 15mm for Modern US vs Insurgents but sold it off.
Used to have 3mm/1:600 modern land forces (Israeli/Iranian/US) but sold them off.

For me, as i said in the other it's ancients definitely. I love ancient mesopotamia especially, though it's usually the later periods that end up getting represented in wargames.

My favorite is World War II European Campaign D-Day to Battle of the Bulge (I know, pretty typical), as well as some of the eastern front, Stalingrad in particular.
I also really like the Wild West which I still think is a very under developed area for miniatures games. It is getting better though.
Finally, I like a bit of the American Revolution. I mostly like the northern campaign to Saratoga, though; I have nothing against the southern campaign either.

Medieval ages. Both European and Arabic.
Then, the classic era. Greece, Roman Empire, Egipt, etc...
Then, the Reinaissance and American Conquest. (The flag at the side of my nickname in the forum will reveal why )
The rest of periods, besides contemporary, are in general neutral to me.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.
