A friend and I are thinking about making the leap into FoW and starting with the new mid-war stuff that was released in conjunction with the new rules update. We're thinking about each getting a Battle of El Alamein starter set and trading each other what we don't want (I'll take the British, he'll take the Germans) and then each getting the larger box sets for our respective factions. Neither one of us are too interested in competitive play so staying under the 100 point mark for tourny play is fine with us. We just want what looks like a cool game with a little historical flair that we can play each other's homes.

Is this a pretty decent starting point for jumping in now?

If you guys are set on starting FoW then jump in with the new Mid War stuff. The game will be updating the other eras of the war over the next year or two so its probably best to learn the new rules from scratch. If you decide to go Late War or Early War things start to get a little wonky with the rules conversion books. Enjoying the game with your buddy is the most important thing, find out what you like and make the rules work for you.

I feel the need, the need for speed.

Early-late war conversions are good for fun games too or maybe even better than midwar with its currently very limited options.
We also play home games for fun and even ones who were skeptic when it came out like the conversions after we started playing.

My recommendation would be to forgo the El Alamein starter set, as the "terrain" and dice are meh, and the extra rulebook would be superfluous.

If you get one box of the Afrika Korp and Desert Rats starter sets each, plus the books for each, and you're looking at just under $200.
From there, dice is cheap, and terrain can be made or purchased based on desired quality.

Just be aware that it is easier to builder a larger point army with the German box, so the British player may have to pick up some additional units.

Use http://v4fowlists.blogspot.com/ to plan out your army before you get the books.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I stopped by my FLGS on the way home from work and bought the Desert Rats box and book.

Since I bought the Desert Rat's set/book, I started to put a list together while trying to stay in the 60 to 50 point range (which is where my buddy and I have decided to start).

53 points-

Grant Armoured HQ (2x Grant)
Grant Armoured Troop (3x Grant)
Crusader Armoured Troop (1x Crusader II, 2x Crusader III)
25pdr Field Troop (2x 25pdr gun)
Hurricane Tank-Busting Flight (2x Hurricane)

I thinking about attaching a motor platoon or Honey troop as Formation Support. Is this a decent enough start?

I'm by no means an expert in any of this stuff, but I do play Desert Brits, so should try and be helpful at least.

X2 gun artillery batteries are relatively difficult to use due to the negative modifiers, plus the morale issue with x2 gun units (which is a debatable point, but it's there for consideration).

I would consider building the x2 guns that come in the box set as 17/25 pounders, and buy a full set of x4 25 pdrs. The 17pdrs would likely not be used often, but can be good to have around in case your friend decides he needs a Tiger at some point (he likely will).

I'm from the future. The future of space

I concur with the above. The 17/25 will likely be better than the 25 pdr if you only have 2.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Awesome, thanks for the tips! I'll definitely pick up some 25pdrs this week so I can get them built. My buddy and I have just decided to go to 100 points because he can easily do it with his Germans, so adding another pair of 25pdrs is easy enough.

25 pounders are my favourite Brit unit, all round good work

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

I've always liked the 25pdr and I have a 1/35 scale model of it that I'm looking forward to building.
