Just starting with 40k now at the dawn of 8th and have got myself some troops and a few heavy weapon teams.
Just wanted some input on how I'm planning my squads. These first two will be for mobility and taking objectives so I'm giving them flamers but as for heavy weapons I'm a bit unsure. I guess, since they will be operating close to enemies that Heavy Bolters would be the best option to get as many shots off as possible but since its now possible to split fire, I could give them some long range power and make them multipurpose. Im thinking las-cannons or missile launchers?
But what tend to be the best option for squads, specialise them for a single purpose or try and make them useful in all situations?
I will add a heavy weapon squad later, probably with mortars, to give some support at range but for the squad HW id love some feedback since I'm new to the game.

When in doubt, Autocannons. They're not the best at a dedicated role obviously but if you're weighing up what to bring for 'All-Comers' then I'd recommend them if you're unsure. At least that's what I do. Infantry Squads - particularly now they can't be blobbed - tend to evaporate so quickly that outfitting them for a specific role rarely works out. That's what Scions and maybe Veterans (with their better BS) are for. If you're going for a dedicated role (Lascannons, etc), take Heavy Weapon Squads instead imo, at least this edition. Mortars are also great since they're cheap as chips now.

The way that the plastic box works, you can built the mortar and the missile launcher independently of the tripod weapon, as long as you add extra bodies from a basic squad box.
My current gut reaction to the leaked rules puts the lascannon first in overall utility, followed by the heavy bolter, mortar, missile launcher, and finally the autocannon. In a world where AP matters more than strength, paying for S7 doesn't make sense to me.
Heavy bolter/flamer is most obvious combination for infantry squads, but don't sleep on plasma/lascannon or even plasma/Missile Launcher. with missiles and lascannons the same price, you have to ask if the extra strength on the lascannon is worth as much as a pretty decent frag missile option.
I'd probably build your first few teams as heavy bolters, with mortars and missiles built from the extra bits. That will give you plenty of options, and you can always add lascannons later.

glue the tripod, don't glue the gun, and you can freely swap out AC/HB/Las.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Tnx for the input guys. I thought about making the LC/ HB/ AC swappable but some disorder within me don't like the accessories not matching what goes on on the base :O
I would go with HB in an instant if I wasnt intrigued by the lascannons D6 damage. But since these first squads will be the ones moving the most around the board and likely to end up close to enemies HB seems better.
The plan was to add two more squads after these to provide support at range so lascannons/Missile might be better left for those.
I just want to make sure I'm not building these only to scrap them for parts later
