Looking through some posts and articles and planning how to put an army together I noticed something weird.

A regular infantry sergeant comes equipped with a chainsword and laspistol. The laspistol may be replaced with an item from the "Astra militarum ranged weapons" list.
Weirdly enough this list only has three entries, Bolt pistol, Boltgun and Plasma pistol.
Shouldn't lasguns be available as an option as well?

A boltgun is a bolter (space marine tac squads have boltguns).

You are correct that the Sergeant can only take those pistols or a Boltgun. This actually was the same in 7th ed as well.

Ah yes I see that bolt PISTOL is its own entry...
This is weird...Why would a IG sergeant be able to grab a bolter but not a Lasgun? making it impossible for me to model the sergeant applicable :/

It is a weird omission that has been discussed previously. We don't know why they don't have the option to take a lasgun, while e.g. Death Korps Watchmasters (equiv. to Sergeants) can.

Of course, since the Boltgun is almost free, you might as well take it.

That's been a longstanding point of annoyance for Guard players. The 5th edition codex removed lasguns/shotguns as sergeant options and they haven't yet returned.

Presumably the idea is to prevent players from "hiding" the sergeant by making sure he has distinct gear.

Personally I'd let anybody who wants to give the sergeant a lasgun use it. It's not a big deal.

And now they have taken our blobs (well conscripts still have it).
