Hey all,

I'm just starting to learn how to play again and chose The Space Wolves to do so
I haven't played since years (think it was 4th edition ?) and have no clue anymore about the rules.

In 2 weeks, I will have my first friendly match for 500 points (against, I think, Grey Knights but unsure)
For this I have tons of questions :

Should I go for 1 squad with 10 Grey Hunters or 2 squads of each 5 members.
Do I go for Thunderwolf Cavalry or a Venerable Dreadnought ?
Do I choose a Runepriest or a Wolf Lord or a Wolf Guard Battle Leader ?

I don't have much assembled / painted yet and have no vehicles as of yet....
I can still drop by the GW shop and quickly buy a Rhino or so if really needed.
For now, I have 2 Start collecting sets, a Space wolf Dreadnought, Njall, Canis, a Wolf Guard Teminator set and the 8th edition starter box.

So here is my first attempt to a list:

HQ

Rune Priest (82 points)
with Runic stave + bolt pistol

Wolf Guard Battle Leader in Terminator Armor (105 points)
with a pair of wolf claws

TROOPS

5* Grey Hunters (83 points)
with 4 chainswords
3x Grey Hunters - normal
1x Grey Hunter with special weapon - plasma gun
1x Grey Hunter Pack Leader

5* Grey Hunters (85 points)
with 4 chainswords and a wolf standard
4x Grey Hunters - normal
1x Grey Hunter Pack Leader with Power Axe

ELITES

Venerable Dreadnought (145 points)
with Fenrisian Great Axe and a Blizzard Shield

The second list that I had in mind, I think feels less Space Wolfy but more vs Grey Knights Termies :

+ HQ +

Rune Priest [6 PL, 89pts]: 3. Jaws of the World Wolf, Plasma pistol, Runic stave, Smite

Wolf Guard Battle Leader in Terminator Armour [6 PL, 105pts]: Wolf Claw (Pair)

+ Troops +

Grey Hunters [6 PL, 103pts]: 4x Chainsword
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power fist
. 3x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun

Grey Hunters [6 PL, 88pts]
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power axe
. 3x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun

+ Dedicated Transport +

Razorback [5 PL, 115pts]: Twin lascannon

++ Total: [29 PL, 500pts] ++

All comments / help / tactics etc welcome plse...
Thanks a ton in advance!

Let me start by saying that I've never used Power Levels, so all of my advice will be based on points.

I like the first list better. However it lacks any type of ranged firepower.

Dreadnoughts are scary in low point games. I would probably go with a standard Dread with either an Assault Cannon or Twin LasCannons and a Great Wolf Claw w/ Stormbolter. This still gives you some CC, but also gives you a bit of ranged firepower as well. Remember that Dreads are hoofing it across the field, as they can't ride in pods anymore. So being able to shoot until you get there is kind of nice.

All of your Grey Hunters can get Chainswords at no cost and it doesn't replace either of it's other weapons. So go wild with them!

The GHPL has to choose between a Chainsword or a Power Weapon. It's ok though as he has a base of two attacks.

Rhinos look pricey on paper, but are actually pretty effective. At 74pts w/ two Stormbolters they are still a good way to get your troops in the fight and put out eight shots within twelve inches. Not to shabby I'd say. Also if you assault with you Rhino first, then it gets to absorb the overwatch fire instead of your Grey Hunters.

Rune Priests are great, JotWW is really good once more, not as OP as it used to be, but really good. Just remember that they can't do anything from inside a vehicle anymore.

The WGBL seems to be a little out of place, especially in TDA. For a 500pt game I would probably run with just one HQ and leave this guy at home.

Anyway I hope this helps. Good luck and remember to always play what makes you happy. For Russ and the Allfather!!!

I follow you, the WGBL is there, because I find it a really cool model, on the other hand is has rerolls like a Wolf Lord gives...

What I could do is maybe swap him out for 3 swiftclaw bikes and equip them with chainswords... ?

At 500 points Grey Hunters are a bit expensive. Maybd swap them out for swap them out for some blood claw packs with flamers?

The idea for the swiftclaws sounds good, at thd size of game you are playing at they will make thier points back quite well i would think.

Im not looking at the points right now, but changing your dread down to a normal twin las dread gives you some anti armour, and if you can fit a rhino or razorback in then do it.

Thanks a ton for all the info, changed the list (based on what I now have, for 500 points)
Only thing I couldn't change in the Battlescribe tool is to give the 3 swiftclaws all chainswords (says in our book that it's a free swap)

++ Unbound Army (Faction) (Imperium - Space Wolves) [500pts] ++

+ HQ +

Rune Priest [108pts]: 1. Storm Caller, Bolt pistol, Psychic hood, Runic stave, Smite

. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power axe
. 3x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun

Grey Hunters [90pts]: 4x Chainsword
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power fist
. 4x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol

+ Fast Attack +

Swiftclaws [99pts]
. Swiftclaw: Bolt Pistol
. . Bike: Twin boltgun
. Swiftclaw: Bolt Pistol
. . Bike: Twin boltgun
. Swiftclaw Pack Leader: Chainsword
. . Bike: Twin boltgun

This looks a lot more durable/flexible at 500pts.

I'm not sure what you've got on your Rune Priest, wargear etc., but the points don't look right the way you've got it listed.

Also it's not unbound, it's Battleforged as a "Patrol Detachment". This will give you three command points to use during your game, very useful.

You had made a comment that the WGBL gives you rerolls like the Wolf Lord, this is semi correct. The Wolf Lord allows you to reroll 1's to hit, The WGBL allows you to reroll 1's to wound. Given the choice I'll always take the rerolls to hit over the rerolls to wound, because you can't wound if you don't hit.

Anyway just my thoughts. Good luck at the tables.

If I might weigh in?

I'd be looking to get as much save reducing weaponry as possible on the board if we think we're fighting grey knights.

OR

Prioritising weight of fire.

against many other opponents the swiftclaws would be versatile and deadly, but expecting to take down terminators at 500pts with a plasma gun and pair of lascannons for ranged firepower is straight up suicide.

with the reduced risk of deepstriking, and your low model count stopping you from effective area control, I'd be worrying about 10wounds worth of terminator armour dropping in next to you potentially pulling off a charge. I mean your mileage may vary; but a dread with twin-lascannons and fist will lend you ranged firepower and provide an assault deterrent. maybe form a core up around this guy and the razorback, then try and get your 2 min troops and a cheap HQ. any leftover points would be well spent on plasma. to save points, go bloodclaws with flamers.

just my thoughts on the matter; feel free to ignore completely.

yours,
GamerGuy
