I just can't get the white right. I've tried the GW technique from their youtube channel and the ulthuan grey over white primer is coming out far too grey and cold. When I compare my model to the models on the box the difference becomes even more obvious. The GW scheme is clearly white and also has a slight hint of warmth to them, this is what I want.

I'm using valejo white primer then ulthuan grey, as suggested by Duncan, through an airbrush.

Perhaps it's the lighting?

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

I'm no expert, but light is possible, if they're under sodiums or incandescent and you're under bluer lights. Another possibility is to go for something like vallejo leather white, or another yellowish off white color (my GW paint knowledge is at keast one, matbe two revisions out of date, so no paint names). Yellow is IIRC a "warm" color, and might help. Could also try using a light yellowish shade or highlight. Color iirc is relative as seen by eyes--could also be the rest if the scheme contrasts and warms it up.

Blues give a colder feel to white, while greys tend to have a warmer hue by comparison. Is ulthuan grey a blue hued grey or more of a neutral grey like Dawnstone?

I suggest dawnstone and then multiple layers of very thinned white with a thinned Nuln Oil wash in the recesses and a final cleanup layer or two of white.

This is how I paint my Death Company, compared to using a thinned blue wash on my normal, non death company Blood Angels models.

I hope this helps, and if you'd like to see a visual, check out my gallery (Finished Blood Angels) to see the difference.

Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

personally based on gw's image.

Spray primer corax white.

its an off white. not pure bright white

than gloss coat,

then oil wash burnt umber

clean up and call it a day for the white bits.

I might have to pinch this recipe.

“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.” ― Robert A. Heinlein

"Yar har fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is alright with me!
I'll do what I want 'cause a pirate is free, I am a pirate!"

Yup. It's white with a darker brown wash and the rewhited to clean it up. The dark brown wash is whats warming it up.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I was trying to match that too when making a kill team but got stumped on the weathering too, might try Red_Thirst method with thinned Agrax. Those Blood Angels look great.
