Hi all. I am at a crossroads with my scions. I am building them up in an escalation league with a large group of friends and my first fully painted batch is due at the end of August for our first round of games. 500 points. This will be two Tauroxs and roughly 15 scions depending on loadout.

I cant for the life of me decide on a scheme. Ive tried and stripped multiple test models and while I am a decent painter and they look good they take too damn long. I have a new baby and dont have time to spend 4 hours per model.

Is there any way I can speed paint scions that still look good? Id like them to match the city terrain on my board I am also working on so they can have a grimey dirty look too if that works fast. Something with lots of dry brushing and so on? I have access to an airbrush as well. I had thought of something like a few layers of washes and dry brushes, pick out metals, pick out cloth, and do lenses and be done but I cant think of colors that would work.

Any help is appreciated!

Hey man. Here is a look at my base colors for my scions. It's mechanicus Grey and incubi darkness. After this I did washes and some dry brushing. And picked out lenses.

Hope it helps.

Have you considered spraying them a light color like white, bone, blue gray, etc then hitting it with washes? That's how people speed paint things like Deathwing.

If you'd like to push it further, look into airbrushing and zenithal highlights.

This.
The cloth parts can look pretty decent with a wash on a base coat.
For the armors, it might look a bit too flat, unless you do some type of pre-shading like on the 1st link above.

If you go that route, I would recommend a dark color for the cloth, and a lighter one for the armor plates. That way, when you paint the armor after the cloth, small errors won't be as noticeable (as a light wash on a dark fabric won't show too much).
Inquisition-based colors (black cloth, red armor) looks pretty mean. Red is always a bit tricky to highlight, but if you're going the quick and dirty road and don't bother with edge highlighting, you might get away with it.
So prime white, use a black wash on all the cloth parts (probably two coats), then a red on the armor. Maybe two coats too to get a deeper red.

Thanks for the reply guys. I do zenethil quite a bit for my eldar but was worried about it for scions since they have such detail compared to a guardian. Im thinking of base coating in grey, painting armor plates, metal details and washing it all. Then I will decide if I want to do highlights or not.
