Hello chaps. The new 8th edition has breathed some life into my passion for 40k so I was just looking for some ideas for this all comers list. It's not intended for tournaments so doesn't have to be cut throat. Just fun with a decent chance of melting some face off now and again.

Oh, one thing, no Primaris marines or Death Company.

Chaplin, Melta Pistol [110]

5 Assault Marines, 2 Melta Guns, Power Axe [119]
5 Assault Marines, 2 Melta Guns, Power Axe [119]
10 Assault Marines, Thunder Hammer, Melta Pistol, 2 Plasma Guns, Melta Bomb [231]
10 Assault Marines, Thunder Hammer, Melta Pistol, 2 Plasma Guns, Melta Bomb [231]

10 Devastators, Power Maul, Combi-Melta, 4x Heavy Flamers, armourium cherub [226]
Dreadnought, Twin Heavy Flamer, DCCW, Heavy Flamer. [161]

Storm Raven, Twin Assault Cannon, Twin Multi Melta, 2x Storm Strike Missile Launchers [303]

1500pts on the nose. I could be facing anything from Chaos Marines, Mechanicum and Orks so want a fairly balanced army. The Dreadnought just felt like it would be quite fun but I'm happy to swap things out as I'm only half way through building the assault marines at the moment.

What would you chaps suggest I take to up this to 2000pts? A Vanguard Vet squad armed with 2 chainswords each sounds like fun.

Hurricane bolters are a must on the SR, for 8 points they are tops. Consider adding at least1 Sang priest or two for the +1 STR bubble. A Librarian would also add a lot to your assault marines with his buffs!

Unfortunately my SR was an ebay purchase and did not come with any hurricane Bolters. Otherwise, yeah, they'd go on without a doubt!!

I was looking at the Sang Priest. I'll add him in on the extra 500pts. A chaplin, pries and libby is too many HQs unfortunately. Although the +1A benefit would be awesome for a unit of Assault MArines. I was also toying with the idea of a unit of Vanguard Vets with 2 Chainswords each. 180pts for a squad of 10. Dishing out 40 attacks sounds pretty awesome. 50 with that power ...............an ideal world I know but it should seriously hurt units of Orks and chaff units and still comes in pretty cheap.

You will unfortunately find yourself losing a fair melee with orks. 30 boyz for 180 points are tough and pack quite a punch, with or without support. Even with those 50 attacks and getting the charge their survivors will kill a larger portion of your unit on average. Regular assault marines won't fare any better.

I'd personally move the load outs around a bit.

give the melta squads TH/PF. The 10 man squads give LC/PW and flamers.

I'd also consider taking a furioso with a frag cannon instead of the dead with flamers.

The dev's if you're set on them would benefit nice with a captains re-roll 1's. Otherwise if it was me I'd take bikes and pop melta onto them and take a 5 man tac squad with flamer+heavy flamer to cruise around in the SR.

My experience on this new edition so far is use infantry/bikes/jp unit's as a single focus force, multi purpose only seems to work with things like storm ravens/land raiders/walkers/LoW...

We are the sons of Sanguinius, the protectors of Mankind. Aye, we are indeed the Angels of Death.

The reason the 10 man squads had the TH was that I didn't want all my eggs in one basket so to speak but they can be changed in/out with no effort.

The Furioso looked good but I couldn't quite fit it in points-wise - Hence the normal Dread. As for the Devastators, how does the Captain help out? They Auto Hit already. A lieutenant would be better for re-roll 1's to wound but that's a lot of points just to re-roll half their failed wound rolls.

The points changes in the new Marine Codex probably means there are going to be similar points changes to the Blood Angels making list building now a fairly mute point.

Re-rolls for the melta on the dev's. Flamers won't make a difference.
