I did not plan on writing a battle report so this is just a very cursory report with the most basic of information.

Deathwing - 3x Terminator squads
Terminator Librarian
Terminator Apothecary
Deathwing Champion Terminator
Belial
2x Landraider Crusaders

I am probably leaving out details but thats basically what he had. It was my first game in many years and first 8th edition game, so I made a lot of mistakes, forgetting my own units rules, forgetting how I had equipped certain units, and forgetting to even deploy a full unit of wraith guard with D-scythes until the wave serpent blew up in turn 3 or 4.

My forces

Avatar
Farseer skyrunner
2x5 man shining spears
2 wave serpents star engines / 1 with star cannons / 1 with shuriken cannons
2 (5) man wraith guard with d-scythes (inside serpents)
hemlock wraith fighter
3x war walkers with star cannons

To cut to the point. My army list consists of units that are all very durable, have high toughness, high wounds, and invuln saves. Also they are very fast and deadly. Shining spears have speed, can shoot with 6S and -4 and do 2 damage. Pretty much terminator killers. The D-scythe wraith guard are also great for slaughtering everything they touch.

The first few turns he basically blasted away with minimal effect. He had to close into close combat range to do damage this his terminators. I hit them with d-scythes and counter charged with shining spears. strategy worked very well for me. He failed a few charges with his characters and a terminator squad, and they caught a huge amount of damage. 1 full terminator squad was dead on my first turn. And by the 2nd turn he had lost a number of terminators with shields, and only had 1 wound left on 1 of his land raiders. He managed to kill a few shining spears, and finally bring down the avatar turn 3 after pouring massive amounts of fire and CC units into it. But not before losing a 2nd terminator squad and land raider.

His army just couldnt manage to do enough damage to my highly resilient units, though he did roll poorly - I also was not rolling the 5+ avatar save. And I forgot totally to deploy my 2nd unit of Wraith guard with d-scythes on my 2nd turn. They wouldve killed off another terminator squad I would imagine. The hemlock rolled around and cause some great wounds the first two turns. And the wave serpent shield went off and kill the deathwing champion quiet easily.

Overall the strategy of loading my army with very tough and durable units worked out. I outlasted a terminator army. I also had the speed and lethality to get my units where they needed to be very quickly and then deliver serious damage - not allowing much of a chance to let them return the damage. The best defense is to simply kill your enemy so fast they cannot hurt you.

If I had remember the 5+ on the avatar, my 3 war walkers having star cannons and NOT shuriken cannons, and the 2nd unit of WG. I think I couldve forced a concession on the 2nd turn.
