Hi guys,

Are there any specific rules around base sizes these days?

I am debating buying the FW Avatar of Khaine, but it looks like he's on a 50mm base, while the regular Avatar is on a 40mm base.

Is this going to be a problem for me in organized events? I know normal day to day play no one will care, but I'm curious about tournaments and official events?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, there are none. Contact any tourneys you're interested in before basing, if in doubt.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

If you use the base that is provided, there shouldn't be a problem.

Then again, Tournament's have their own house rules, they could demand every model is on bike bases for all we know. You need to contact them and ask.

If you're REALLY paranoid, dowel the avatar's feet and make the base modular, or bring a blank 40mm base to replace and measure distances too.

The Forgeworld Avatar is a Games Workshop model.

If you buy a Games Workshop model, the rules are naturally assuming that you're using the base provided (because there are no rules telling you you can or should change any part of the model, including its base).

The fact that one version of the Avatar is on a 40mm base and the other is on a 50mm base is immaterial.

Buy the model. Use the base it comes with.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!
